Managing RAID controllers with Storage Managementcapabilities, the drop-down menu dynamically displays only thosetasks appropriate for the selected controller.For example, Set Rebuild Rate is a Storage Management controllertask that can be used to manage system performance during therebuilding of a virtual disk. Other tasks include creating virtual disks,reconditioning the controller battery, and exporting the controllerlog to a file. In addition, controllers perform storage managementtasks such as rebuilding data, initializing disks, and so on. Manyof these tasks are displayed in the GUI when the lower-level object(the array disk or the virtual disk) is selected in the tree view.Managing array disks and hard disks. A controller’s channelsare typically attached to a server’s backplane or an external diskenclosure. The backplane or enclosure contains physical disks, eachlabeled in Storage Management as either an array disk or a harddisk. In Storage Management terminology, an array disk is attachedto a RAID controller and can be part of a virtual disk. A hard diskis attached to a non-RAID controller or to a non-RAID channel ofa RAID controller.Depending on the capabilities of the controller, Storage Managementenables administrators to perform various functions on arrayand hard disks (see Figure 4). For example, the Prepare to Removetask spins down an array disk so that it can safely be removed froman enclosure. Administrators can also use the Blink task—whichmakes the LEDs on a specific disk blink—to assist in locating adisk within an enclosure.Administrators can protect data that is stored on redundantvirtual disks by assigning an array disk as a hot spare. A hot spare isan unused backup disk that is reserved to take the place of a failedarray disk for redundant virtual disks. Hot spares remain in standbymode. When an array disk that is used in a redundant virtual diskfails, the hot spare is activated to replace the failed array disk.Managing virtual disks. A virtual disk consists of one or morearray disks. RAID controllers use RAID algorithms to store data onvirtual disks. Different RAID levels provide varying degrees of redundancyand performance. Storage Management has an Express Wizardand an Advanced Wizard for creating virtual disks. These wizardsare designed to assist administrators in creating virtual disks thateffectively utilize disk space and provide sufficient data protection.If data capacity or protection requirements change, administratorsmay need to either expand the virtual disk by adding array disksor change the virtual disk’s RAID level. The Reconfigure VirtualDisk Wizard is designed to assist in these tasks.Another example of a virtual disk task available through theStorage Management tool is Check Consistency. If the virtual disk isconfigured with a redundant RAID level, the Check Consistency taskenables administrators to verify the accuracy of the redundant informationand correct it if necessary. Administrators can also modify thevirtual disk’s performance characteristics by using the Change Policytask to change the virtual disk’s read, write, and cache policies.Installing Dell storage management softwareSince March 2005, Array Manager and Storage Management havebeen available as components of the Dell OpenManage Systems ManagementCD and have been able to take advantage of the nativeinstallation strategy. Using the Dell OpenManage Systems ManagementCD, administrators can install the full version of Array Managerthat includes the Node and Console components. The Array ManagerConsole can also be installed independent of the Array Manager Nodethrough the Dell OpenManage Management Station CD. Installingthe Array Manager Console can be useful in environments whereboth Array Manager– and Storage Management–managed systemsexist. In subsequent references to installation and migration in thisarticle, the term Array Manager refers to the Array Manager Nodeand Console package.Beginning with the March 2005 Dell OpenManage release,Windows-based installations use Windows Installer technology,Linux-based installations use Red Hat Package Manager (RPM )technology, and NetWare-based installations use IPS scripts. STORAGE TECHNOLOGYDell OpenManage installation framework that was consistent acrossoperating systems.In version 4 or earlier of the Dell OpenManage suite, ArrayManager is the available option for storage management. ArrayManager can be installed either as a stand-alone product or as partof the Dell OpenManage suite. In the express installation of DellOpenManage, Array Manager is installed.Dell OpenManage 4.1 introduces Dell OpenManage ServerAdministrator Storage Management, which can be installed onlythrough the Dell OpenManage suite. Both Array Manager and StorageManagement are available beginning in version 4.1, but only one ofthese applications can be installed on a system. In versions 4.1 and4.2, the default installation is Array Manager—which means that,during an express installation, Array Manager will be installed as thestorage management software; Storage Management must be installedthrough the custom installation option in versions 4.1 and 4.2.Beginning with Dell OpenManage 4.3, Storage Managementis the default installation for storage management software. If nostorage management software is installed on the system, StorageManagement will be installed in an express installation. It is alsothe default in a custom installation; administrators must use thecustom installation option to install Array Manager in 4.3.Migrating from Array Manager to Storage ManagementTo migrate systems from Array Manager to Storage Management,administrators can choose from several methods, depending onwhether the native installation or Dell OpenManage installationframework is used.For systems running a version of Array Manager earlier thanversion 3.1.1, a direct migration to Storage Management is notpossible. To preserve metadata such as virtual disk names, administratorscan upgrade to the latest Array Manager version and thenmigrate the system according to the procedure discussed later inthis section. Alternatively, administrators can manually uninstallArray Manager before installing Storage Management, but metadatawill not be preserved.The next upgrade scenario comprises systems running ArrayManager version 3.1.1 to 3.6 that are being upgraded to StorageManagement through Dell OpenManage 4.1 or 4.2. In this case,administrators can migrate the system directly through the DellOpenManage upgrade process. When performing the upgrade, administratorsshould use the custom installation option and select StorageManagement as the storage management software.For systems running Array Manager version 3.1.1 to 3.6 that arebeing upgraded through Dell OpenManage 4.3 (or later), administratorscan run the native installation through the Dell OpenManageSystems Management CD. Because Array Manager is already installedon the system, the express (default) installation is Array Manager. Toinstall Storage Management, administrators must perform a custominstallation. In this case, Array Manager will automatically be removedfrom the system and metadata will be preserved.In organizations that have previously upgraded or installedArray Manager through Dell OpenManage 4.3 (or later) and planto migrate their systems to Storage Management, administratorscan use the modify feature of Windows Installer. Administratorsshould modify the installation to include Storage Management andremove Array Manager.Implementing integrated storage management softwareA system’s storage architecture comprises many components. Touse storage resources effectively, administrators must choose awell-suited management tool. Dell OpenManage Server AdministratorStorage Management is designed to ease storage managementand enable organizations to optimize their storageresources. Using Dell OpenManage tools, administrators areenabled to easily and effortlessly migrate systems from ArrayManager to Storage Management. In addition, Storage Managementis seamlessly integrated into the Dell OpenManageServer Administrator suite, allowing administrators to use one consolidatedapproach for managing Dell enterprise platforms.Lisa Filemyr is a software engineer on the Enterprise Storage developmentteam at Dell.
