outside all mineral processing plants, and the amount of dust-laden air ducted outside for thisapplication is minor in comparison to other sources.Safety IssuesAll personnel entering the cleaning booth must wear personal protective equipment, including anapproved fit-tested respirator with filters that are acceptable for the material being processed, andhearing and eye protection. In addition, based upon the Occupational Safety and HealthAdministration (OSHA) mandated pressure regulation, the air pressure at the air spray manifoldmust be regulated to a maximum of 30 psi before being directed toward the individualperforming the clothes cleaning process.EFFECTIVENESS OF CLOTHES CLEANING TECHNOLOGYDuring development, the new clothes cleaning technology was compared to both the MSHAapprovedvacuuming approach and a single handheld compressed air hose. In this testing,several 100-percent cotton and cotton/polyester blend type coveralls were soiled with limestonedust before the worker entered the clothes cleaning booth. Table 8.1 shows the three cleaningmethods, their effectiveness in cleaning dust off the two types of coveralls, and the time it tookthe worker to perform the cleaning task. Clearly, the use of the clothes cleaning system wasmuch more effective at removing the dust than the other two approaches, and required only afraction of the time, 17 to 18 seconds compared to an average of 372 seconds for vacuuming andan average of 178 seconds for the handheld compressed air hose. Table 8.1 also shows that thepolyester/cotton blend coveralls were cleaned more effectively than the 100 percent cotton type.Figure 8.3 depicts a worker before and after entering the clothes cleaning booth.Cleaning methodTable 8.1. The firstregulation is an MSHA standard 30 CFR Part 56.13020, which states: "At no time shallcompressed air be directed toward a person. When compressed air is used, all necessaryprecautions shall be taken to protect persons from injury." A deflector mechanism isincorporated into the air spray manifold which allows the top air nozzles to be covered overwhen shorter individuals are performing the cleaning process.
