QUARTOSEPTCENTENNIAL SPECIAL SOUVENIRPlanting of 175 Species ofTree SaplingsThe <strong>Madras</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> <strong>College</strong> campus has becomea model for a Green Campus and is probably one of thebiodiversity rich campus in India. As on date, the campusharbours about 140 tree species, about 60 shrubs anddouble the number of herbs.During the QSC year it was decided to add more varieties oftrees to the campus. Our campus has a mixture of nativeand alien trees with the balance of composition tiltingtowards the native trees.Hence it has been planned to add 175 different speciesof trees under the project ‘Enriching the Greenery of MCCCampus’. Many of the trees that are to be planted will benative trees especially from Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest. Afew botanical curios such as Baobabs and rare varieties ofpalms have already been planted. Other rare alien speciesare also under consideration for the purpose of teaching,research and public attraction. Saplings of native speciescollected from different sources will be planted in a phasedmanner.The tree sapling planting was inaugurated by the PrincipalDr R W Alexander Jesudasan, in the presence of the Bursar,Mr.Sundaraj, the Curator, Dr.Manu Thomas Mathai, DrD Narasimhan, the Public Relation Officer, Dr.WilliamGnanasekar and other officials of the Institution.Tree saplings planted on the way to the main blockPrayer at the Planting of the first saplingPlanting of a tree sapling during the NationalConference on Higher Education41
