HUM 1053 STRING ENSEMBLE (1 credit). Provides students the opportunity to<br />

earn credit through performance as part <strong>of</strong> a wind ensemble under the direction <strong>of</strong> a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the humanities faculty. May be repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> four credits. May not<br />

be used to satisfy humanities elective credit. (Requirement: Instructor approval.)<br />

HUM 1150 FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC (3 credits). Introduces music<br />

notation and structure. Includes basic elements <strong>of</strong> music composition, clefs, pitch<br />

and rhythm reading and counting, major and minor scales and keys, simple intervals,<br />

chords and melody writing. (HU)<br />

HUM 1540 ETHICS (3 credits). Explores ethical theories in the context <strong>of</strong> contemporary<br />

moral problems. Topics may include abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment<br />

and torture. (HU)<br />

HUM 2051 CIVILIZATION 1: ANCIENT THROUGH MEDIEVAL<br />

(3 credits). Introduces civilization from its early development to the European<br />

Renaissance. Emphasizes the interpretation <strong>of</strong> primary texts that reflect the intellectual<br />

and historical changes in society. The first <strong>of</strong> two interdisciplinary courses.<br />

Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />

HUM 2052 CIVILIZATION 2: RENAISSANCE THROUGH MODERN<br />

3 credits). Similar in purpose and method to HUM 2051, continues the interpretation<br />

<strong>of</strong> primary texts, emphasizing the Renaissance period, the Enlightenment,<br />

Romanticism and the Modern Age. Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />

HUM 2085 CRITICAL APPROACHES TO HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL<br />

SCIENCES (3 credits). Examines issues in the humanities and the social sciences.<br />

Improves students’ critical thinking and writing abilities. Topics announced prior to<br />

registration. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: COM 1101.<br />

HUM 2140 WORLD ARCHITECTURE (3 credits). Surveys some <strong>of</strong> the most<br />

significant architectural works from pre-history to the present from an ethnically<br />

and socially diverse perspective. Includes design, construction methods, effects <strong>of</strong><br />

technology, purpose and function, as well as basic methods <strong>of</strong> analysis and interpretation.<br />

HUM 2141 WORLD ART HISTORY 1: PRE-HISTORY TO EARLY GLOBAL<br />

AWARENESS (3 credits). Surveys world art history and methodology from prehistory<br />

to circa 1500. Emphasizes analyzing and understanding works <strong>of</strong> painting,<br />

sculpture, textiles and decorative arts in their respective historical and cultural<br />

contexts. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />

HUM 2142 WORLD ART HISTORY 2: EARLY MODERN TO POST-<br />

COLONIAL (3 credits). Surveys world art history and methodology from circa 1500<br />

to present day. Emphasizes analyzing and understanding works <strong>of</strong> painting, sculpture,<br />

photography, textiles, decorative arts, alternative art forms and new media in their<br />

respective historical and cultural contexts. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />

HUM 2150 JAZZ ENSEMBLE (1 credit). Provides the experienced music student<br />

the opportunity to earn credit through performance as part <strong>of</strong> a jazz ensemble under<br />

the direction <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the humanities faculty. May be repeated for a total <strong>of</strong><br />

four credits. May not be used to satisfy humanities elective credit. (Requirements:<br />

Instructor approval and two semesters <strong>of</strong> other ensemble courses.)<br />

HUM 2151 MUSIC THEORY 1 (3 credits). Examines notational elements, intervals,<br />

chords and tonal harmony. Includes basic singing, and keyboard and dictation<br />

exercises in a lab setting. (HU) Prerequisites: COM 1102, HUM 1150.<br />

HUM 2152 MUSIC APPRECIATION (3 credits). Introduces the styles and<br />

history <strong>of</strong> music. Teaches musical discourse and critical listening. Familiarizes students<br />

with works <strong>of</strong> music in the various historical style periods. (HU) Prerequisites:<br />

COM 1102.<br />

HUM 2153 POPULAR MUSIC AND CULTURE (3 credits). Introduces the<br />

grammar <strong>of</strong> Western music through music theory. Teaches skills in pitch and rhythm<br />

notation, and the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> melody, harmony and time. Familiarizes students<br />

with up-to-date notation and counterpoint s<strong>of</strong>tware. (HU) Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />

HUM 2226 SURVEY OF WORLD LITERATURE 2 (3 credits). Surveys world<br />

literature through 20th-century short stories drawn from a wide variety <strong>of</strong> languages<br />

and cultures. Topics include colonization, cultural identity, alienation, gender roles,<br />

family life and social class. (Requirement: Must be enrolled in University Alliance.)<br />

HUM 2250 LITERATURE: VOICE AND VISION (3 credits). A close reading<br />

and interpretation <strong>of</strong> texts representing the major genres <strong>of</strong> literature: short story,<br />

poem, drama and novel. (HU)<br />

HUM 2385 SPECIAL TOPICS IN WORLD HISTORY (3 credits). Examines<br />

cultural, geographical and philosophical issues in world history. Topics announced<br />

prior to registration. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />

HUM 2401 INTRODUCTION TO LAW (3 credits). Introduces the basics <strong>of</strong> the<br />

U.S. legal system. Explores the U.S. Consitution, civil liberties and civil rights, the U.S.<br />

judicial system and how citizens interact with it. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: COM 1101.<br />

HUM 2480 INTRODUCTION TO POLITICAL SCIENCE (3 credits).<br />

Introduces students to the theories and concepts <strong>of</strong> political science. Emphasizes<br />

examining the interaction between ideas, values and institutions in contemporary U.S.<br />

political culture. (SS)<br />

HUM 2510 LOGIC (3 credits). Deals mainly with deductive logic, although all the<br />

fallacies <strong>of</strong> reasoning are examined in both an informal and a formal context. Brings<br />

out the role <strong>of</strong> logic in science and law, as well as ways <strong>of</strong> making formal pro<strong>of</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />

validity. (HU) Prerequisites: COM 1101.<br />

HUM 2570 BIOETHICS (3 credits). Studies ethical questions raised by 20thcentury<br />

technology as they affect medicine, ecology and social issues. (HU)<br />

HUM 3026 THE CIVILIZATION OF ISLAM (3 credits). Focuses on some <strong>of</strong> the<br />

achievements <strong>of</strong> Islam from 7th-century Arabic, to medieval Spain and India, to the<br />

20th century. Uses documents from literature, theology, architecture, science and the<br />

contemporary media. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3085 SPECIAL TOPICS IN HUMANITIES (3 credits). Offers interdisciplinary<br />

study <strong>of</strong> a particular period, movement, genre or individual that embraces<br />

more than a single humanistic discipline. Topics announced prior to registration. (HU)<br />

Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3150 MASTERWORKS OF MUSIC (3 credits). Works <strong>of</strong> master composers<br />

in the various stylistic periods, 1600 to the present: Bach and Handel; Mozart<br />

and Haydn; Beethoven; the 19th century and early 20th centuries. (HU) Prerequisites:<br />

HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3151 MEDIEVAL, RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE MUSIC<br />

(3 credits). Surveys musical styles and practices from the Middle Ages through the<br />

Renaissance. Includes an extended look at the baroque style. Prerequisites: HUM 2051,<br />

HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3152 CLASSICAL, ROMANTIC AND MODERN MUSIC (3 credits).<br />

Surveys works <strong>of</strong> master composers from the late Baroque (Bach and Handel)<br />

through Mozart, Beethoven and the Romantics, to 20th- and 21st-century musicians.<br />

HUM 3185 SPECIAL TOPICS IN FINE ARTS (3 credits). Studies a particular<br />

HUM 3212 ENGLISH AND AMERICAN LITERATURE 1 (3 credits). Surveys<br />

English and American literature <strong>of</strong> the late 18th to early 20th century, from the<br />

French Revolution to World War I. Emphasizes the interpretation <strong>of</strong> texts that reflect<br />

changing ideas about individual and national identities during revolutionary times.<br />

HUM 3213 ENGLISH AND AMERICAN LITERATURE 2 (3 credits). Surveys<br />

English and American literature in the 20th and 21st centuries, from World War I to<br />

the present. Emphasizes the interpretation <strong>of</strong> texts that represent the development <strong>of</strong><br />

the modern world and modern selves. Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3230 SHAKESPEARE AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES (3 credits).<br />

Explores the development <strong>of</strong> English theater during the reign <strong>of</strong> Queen Elizabeth I and<br />

King James I. Students read representative plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries.<br />

HUM 3275 CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE (3 credits). Studies literature<br />

since the 1960s. May include short stories, plays, poems and novels by McGuane,<br />

Davies, Percy, Fowles, Pinter, Beckett and Morrison. The syllabus varies considerably<br />

from semester to semester. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3285 SPECIAL TOPICS IN LITERATURE (3 credits). Studies a<br />

particular author, a group <strong>of</strong> authors, a historical literary movement or a literary theme<br />

HUM 3331 AMERICAN HISTORY: PRE-COLUMBIAN TO CIVIL WAR<br />

ERA (3 credits). Surveys some <strong>of</strong> the basic problems in U.S. history through the Civil<br />

War era. Emphasizes origins, social characteristics and competing cultural values <strong>of</strong><br />

the peoples that formed the American nation. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: HUM 2051,<br />

HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3332 AMERICAN HISTORY: FROM RECONSTRUCTION TO<br />

THE PRESENT (3 credits). Examines the major ideas, ideals and events that<br />

have determined the American experience in the 19th and 20th centuries. (HU/SS)<br />

Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3351 HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: ANCIENT AND<br />

MEDIEVAL (3 credits). Surveys the origins <strong>of</strong> science in antiquity and the Middle<br />

Ages. Includes development <strong>of</strong> mathematical, physical and biological thought in the<br />

ancient and medieval period, and the relationship between science, technology and<br />

HUM 3352 HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: RENAISSANCE<br />

TO PRESENT (3 credits). Surveys the principal developments in science, mathematics<br />

and technology from the Renaissance to the present. Includes scientific<br />

revolution, development <strong>of</strong> modern biology and the relationship between technology<br />

HUM 3385 SPECIAL TOPICS IN HISTORY (3 credits). Offers an opportunity<br />
