HUM 3401 CONSTITUTIONAL LAW 1 (3 credits). Surveys the evolution <strong>of</strong><br />

U.S. constitutional law. Emphasizes the development <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Supreme Court. Uses<br />

important legal cases to determine how power is distributed between the national and<br />

state governments. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: HUM 2051 or HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3402 CONSTITUTIONAL LAW 2 (3 credits). Continues HUM 3401.<br />

Includes in-depth study <strong>of</strong> the distribution <strong>of</strong> power between individuals and government<br />

through review <strong>of</strong> important legal cases dealing primarily with civil liberties and<br />

civil rights. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: HUM 3401.<br />

HUM 3485 SPECIAL TOPICS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE (3 credits). Studies<br />

a particular social group or institution, social process or social change. Topics<br />

announced prior to registration. (SS) Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3521 WORLD RELIGIONS (3 credits). Introduces religion and examines<br />

the philosophy <strong>of</strong> religion. Religion is seen as humanity’s attempt to grapple with the<br />

question <strong>of</strong> the meaning <strong>of</strong> life, the forms that religious perspectives have taken<br />

and the universal aspects <strong>of</strong> human existence. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051,<br />

HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3551 SURVEY OF ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY<br />

(3 credits). Surveys the history <strong>of</strong> philosophy from its beginnings with the pre-Socratic<br />

Greeks up through its influence on Christian scholasticism in the Middle Ages.<br />

Covers the sweep <strong>of</strong> intellectual history from Thales to Thomas. (HU) Prerequisites:<br />

HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3552 SURVEY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY<br />

PHILOSOPHY (3 credits). Surveys philosophy beginning with the Renaissance<br />

rise <strong>of</strong> science. Follows rationalism and empiricism, the philosophies <strong>of</strong> Kant, Hegel<br />

and Marx, and concludes with two main movements <strong>of</strong> the 20th century: analytic<br />

philosophy and existentialism. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3585 SPECIAL TOPICS IN PHILOSOPHY (3 credits). Studies a<br />

particular period, movement, or individual philosopher or religious figure. Topics<br />

announced prior to registration. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 4100 SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT (3 credits). A project consisting <strong>of</strong><br />

original research that will result in a substantial written work about a significant issue<br />

in the humanities. Serves as the culmination <strong>of</strong> a humanities major’s undergraduate<br />

program. (Requirement: Senior standing and department head approval.) (HU) (Q)<br />

HUM 4150 INDEPENDENT STUDY (3 credits). Offers the humanities major<br />

an opportunity to study a particular period, movement, genre or individual under the<br />

supervision <strong>of</strong> a faculty member. (Requirement: Department head approval.) (HU)<br />

Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 4510 RECENT ISSUES IN LOGIC (3 credits). Introduces the many<br />

competing systems <strong>of</strong> logic recently developed and advocated. Also addresses the<br />

debate inspired by logical pluralism. (Requirement: Prerequisite course or instructor<br />

approval.) Prerequisites: ECE 1551 or HUM 2510.<br />

HUM 5020 THE ROOTS OF RHETORIC: CLASSICAL AND<br />

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES (3 credits). Includes a study <strong>of</strong> the origins and<br />

principles <strong>of</strong> rhetoric from ancient Greece through the 14th century. Special emphasis<br />

is placed on major texts, historical figures, central issues and analytical aspects <strong>of</strong> the<br />

discipline.<br />

HUM 5510 RECENT ISSUES IN LOGIC (3 credits). Introduces non-classical<br />

systems including modal, intuitionistic, many-valued, fuzzy, paraconsistent and nonmonotonic<br />

logics. Also addresses applications for these logics and the logical pluralism<br />

debate. Prerequisites: HUM 2510.<br />

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY<br />

IDS 1010 COMMUNITY SERVICE (1 credit). Fosters the development <strong>of</strong><br />

self-reflective, culturally aware and responsible community participants through a<br />

community service volunteer experience. Requires reflective writing and discussions,<br />

and assigned readings.<br />

INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCE<br />

ISC 1500 INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABILITY (3 credits). Uses lectures,<br />

reading and discussions to explore the biological, environmental, economic,<br />

technological, humanistic and social science aspects <strong>of</strong> sustainable resource use and<br />

development.<br />

ISC 2501 SCIENTIFIC DIVING TECHNIQUES AND CERTIFICATION<br />

(3 credits). Provides training in underwater research techniques and certification<br />

by American Academy <strong>of</strong> Underwater Sciences upon completion. Includes health<br />

and safety certifications required by AAUS, lectures and 12 science training dives.<br />

(Requirements: Prerequisite course or Basic Open Water Dive certification and<br />

AAUS-approved medical examination.) Prerequisites: PED 1154.<br />

ISC 4000 APPLIED SUSTAINABILITY (3 credits). Requires the design, production<br />

and presentation <strong>of</strong> an individual or group project on improving the sustainable<br />

operation <strong>of</strong> some aspect <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Florida</strong> Tech main campus, <strong>Florida</strong> Tech satellite<br />

location or another approved location. (Requirement: Permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor.)<br />

ISC 5016 PRESENTING SCIENCE (3 credits). Introduces the principles and<br />

practices <strong>of</strong> presenting research findings. Focuses on effective methods <strong>of</strong> communicating<br />

scientific and technological discoveries in readily understandable and useful<br />

ways. Emphasizes techniques for communicating complex scientific principles and<br />

research outcomes to the general public.<br />

ISC 5200 PROFESSIONAL INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCE MASTER’S<br />

SEMINAR (1 credit). Exposes students to a broad range <strong>of</strong> topics from STEM,<br />

business, government and nonpr<strong>of</strong>it sectors. Discusses the challenges <strong>of</strong> these topics<br />

during weekly informational seminars. Includes possible report presentations <strong>of</strong><br />

student internship and research projects from groups/teams. (Requirement: Program<br />

chair approval.)<br />

LNG 1701 ELEMENTARY CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE 1<br />

(3 credits). Introduces Chinese language (Mandarin/Putonghua) and culture.<br />

Includes basic pronunciation (syllable and tones) and the writing system (radicals and<br />

strokes). Develops listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for the beginner.<br />

Covers approximately 300 Chinese characters. Also introduces the social and cultural<br />

background <strong>of</strong> the language. (HU/SS)<br />

LNG 1702 ELEMENTARY CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE 2<br />

(3 credits). Continues LNG 1701. Provides deeper understanding <strong>of</strong> Chinese<br />

language and culture. Includes constructing terms and phrases from basic characters,<br />

expanding vocabulary, understanding grammar and increasing conversational ability,<br />

developing reading skills, and writing not only correct but also beautiful characters in<br />

the language. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: LNG 1701.<br />

LNG 2101 INTERMEDIATE FRENCH 1 (3 credits). Reviews French grammar,<br />

emphasizing conversation and reading assignments from literature and culture at the<br />
