IntroductionStudents as Media Audiences and Socialization:Trends and IssuesKhalid SoussiInstitut National des Postes et Télécommunications, Rabat.The recent brisk advances in new communication technologies have inexorablypervaded the socialisation process of the younger generations perhaps more thanany other generation in human existence. With students being exposed to aplethora of media - oscillating from video games, internet surfing and chatting tosatellite TV channels – the old-established role of socialisation institutions likethe family or school is put into question nowadays. In the same connection, theUN Convention on the Rights of the Child stressed to a great extent the obligationof states toward children to:“ensure that the child has access to information and materialfrom a diversity of national and international sources, especiallythose aimed at the promotion of his or her social, spiritual andmoral well-being and physical and mental health…” ( UNCRC,Article 17, 1989).The article at hand is not geared towards the debate of young adults’ rights tohave “access to international sources of information” but to draw the attention ofeducators to the younger generations’ own statements, as well as their parents’,about their awareness and the effects they perceive of media on their socializationprocess. Dr. D. Walsh, for instance, emphasizes that “electronic media (includingtelevision, video games, movies, and computers) can have profound effects onyoung children because of the power of the media to set examples for youngcitizens to follow”. Interpreting the young citizens’ reports is another target of thearticle at hand. The last one is to connect this overspreading phenomenon in theMoroccan society to the educational context and to suggest ways in whichinstructors can turn the incessant flow of media content into young lives into aconstructive medium for tomorrow citizens.The following section defines some of the central terms to this study. Then, thesubjects, circumstances and methodology of data collection followed in thisexploratory investigation are meticulously described in the subsequent sections.

Key Terms Defined• Media: Means of storing, communicating, and accessing information.Youth today have a number of multi-media choices: conventional (local),satellite and cable TV channels; radio stations; newspapers andmagazines; the internet and computer and video games.• Socialisation:Normative definition: Socialisation is the process whereby society attracts theindividual, through methodical apprenticeship of rules and norms by younggenerations; it favours and reinforces the homogeneity of society. (Durkheim)Dynamic definition: Socialisation corresponds to the process where theindividual appropriates himself to the rules of an organization; to the interactionsof an organization, and to the body of the interactions by which ones constructsthemselves the social identity. (Weber)• GlobalisationThe notion of 'globalisation’ implies that phenomena of different natures havebecome international with unprecedented rapidity as well other phenomena beingborn. All this has led to the birth of an international confrontation of political,social, and ethical views....The long-term incorporation of computers andcommunication technologies have both led to what Toffler calls “the third wave.”(Paul TREANOR, 1997).III. METHODOLOGY1. Personal Observation: The accelerated flow of information via modern massmedia (globalisation) and culture are becoming increasingly inextricable;unrestrained exposure to the latter influences the socialisation process of youngpeople with more briskness in the Moroccan society.2.
