126 - GLOSSARYATTENUATION - The act of decreasing the amplitudeof any signalAUDIBLE RANGE - The range of frequenciesthat the human ear can hear. A healthy young humancan usually hear from 20 cycles per secondto around 20,000 cycles per second (20-20,000Hz), less after prolonged exposure to loud soundsor music.AUDIO SIGNAL - A signal which is intended toeventually be heard.BBAND PASS FILTER - A filter which allows onlya selected band of frequencies to pass throughwhile rejecting all other frequencies above andbelow the cutoff point. Usually a bandpass filterwill allow the user to set the width of the passband.BAND REJECT FILTER - See Filter.BANDWIDTH - The breadth of a range of frequencies.Bandwidth is usually dealt with whendealing with filters. For instance, a band reject filtermight affect all frequencies within a one octaverange.CCABINET- the main part of the synthesizer whichcontains all of the modules except the keyboardcontrols.CANCELLATION - A reduction in volumewhich occurs when two identical waveforms are180 degrees out of phase with each other.CARRIER - A module which is being modulatedby a modulator.CENT - Unit of pitch equal to 1/100 of a semitone.CARLOS, DR. WENDY - Most famous for her1968 album Switched-On Bach and the soundtrackto the movie A Clockwork Orange. She studiedunder Vladimir Ussachevsky, and is good friendswith Bob Moog. She is credited for bringing synthesizersinto the public eye.CENTER DETENT - A notch in the center of aknob or lever which allows the performer to findthe home position.CENTER FREQUENCY - The frequencyaround which a band reject or bandpass filter willattenuate or pass frequencies.CLIPPING - See DistortionCLOSED - An attenuator is closed when it is fullyattenuating the signal. E.g. the volume of a signalwill be completely reduced.CONTOUR - See Envelope GeneratorCONTROL SIGNAL - A signal which the userdoesn’t intend to hear. It is used to modulate anotherpart of the synthesizer.CONTROL VOLTAGE - A raw electrical currentwhich represents a value. It can be assignedto a parameter on a module by connecting it tothat module with a patch cord.CROSS MODULATION - Modulation in whichtwo audio range oscillators frequency modulateeach other simultaneously. This often producesmetallic timbres.CUTOFF FREQUENCY - The frequency abovewhich a low pass filter will start attenuating signalspresent at its input. Abbreviated Fc.
