(See Amplitude Modulation)SSAMPLE - A instantaneous measurement taken<strong>of</strong> an in<strong>com</strong>ing voltage.SAMPLE-AND-HOLD (S/H) - A Module whichtakes a sample <strong>of</strong> an in<strong>com</strong>ing voltage to determineits value, and then holds that value, continuallyputting that voltage out its output until anothersample is taken. The rate at which the S/Hmodule takes samples is determined by either theinternal clock or an input from an external clock.SAWTOOTH WAVE (RAMP WAVE) - A waveformwhich increases gradually to +10 volts beforefalling sharply to 0 volts to begin again. Sawtooth(saw) waves have a large number <strong>of</strong> upperharmonics which give them a rather buzzy sound.SELF-OSCILLATION - When some filters havetheir resonance increased to a high enough level,they will begin to produce a sine wave. This phenomenonis known as self-oscillation.SEMI-MODULAR - A synthesizer which is fullymodular, and each module can be addressed individually,but which also has normals.SERIES MODULATION - Modulation in whichmodule A modulates module B which in turnmodulates module C.SEQUENCER - A device which puts out a series<strong>of</strong> preset voltages in a rhythmic pattern.SIDEBANDS - Frequencies which are added to asound when modulation occurs that is fast enoughand deep enough. Sidebands most frequently occurduring frequency modulation, but can alsooccur during PWM or AM.SINE WAVE - A waveform which has only thefundamental and no harmonics. It has a rather puresound and is <strong>com</strong>monly used as the modulator’swaveform in vibrato.SKIP - One <strong>of</strong> the three main control buttons onthe ARP Sequencer. It causes the sequencer tomove to the next step in a sequence. This functionworks while the sequencer is playing and while itis stopped and can be voltage-controlledSLIDER - See Fader.SOURCE SWITCHING PATCH (SWITCH-ING PATCH) - A patch using the electronicswitch in which jacks A and B are used as inputsand jack C is used as an output. The switch thenswitches between the two sources which go to onedestination.SQUARE WAVE - A pulse wave with a duty cycle<strong>of</strong> 50%. It has only the odd harmonics and a hollowsound to it.STAGE - One individual part <strong>of</strong> an envelopegenerator’s output. E.g. Attack. Also, any one <strong>of</strong>an envelope generator’s parameters.START/STOP - One <strong>of</strong> the ARP sequencer’sthree main controls. The START/STOP controlstarts and stops the sequencer’s internal clock, thuscausing it to run or stop. This function is voltagecontrollable.STEP - A step is a single event in a sequence.Sequences on the ARP sequencer can have betweenone and sixteen steps. A step is usually characterizedby the sequencer putting out a new voltage.SUBSONIC - A tone whose fundamental’s frequencyis below 20 Hz and is thus not audible tohuman ears.
