SECTION FIVE: NOISE GENERATOR - 039Note again that too much modulation depth yields a sound that is so noisy, it cannot really be of muchuse. This is a highly distinctive sound, and is especially useful for producing growling bass sounds, percussion sounds, and distorted types of sounds. Examples of this patch can be heard on CD track 17.MORE POSSIBILITIESSounds which are pulse width modulated by the noise generator may not prove to be the most interestingor musically useful sounds, but it is important to understand this technique and add it to a mentalinventory of simple patches which can be drawn on in the future. When combined with some of thetechniques explained later in this book, this patch becomes much more spectacular. It is important to understand that while the noise generator has no inputs, its output can function aseither an audio signal (when patched to the mixer, for instance) or as a control signal (when patched toan FM input or the PWM input for instance). When other modules are discovered later which allow theuser to shape the sounds produced by the noise generator, it will become more useful as a soundproducing module, whereas this section focused mainly on its abilities as a control signal.
