Quality Assurance of Malaria Diagnostic tests• Evaluating the quality improvementsPeriodically, QIs should be measured to evaluate the success of the Action Plan by anexpert team drawn from National/ Regional/ State resource to be identified by the Dte. ofNVBDCP.2.1.3 Main componentsA QA programme should have two important parts: IQC and EQAs. Differences betweenthese two are as follows:SalientpointsInternal quality control(IQC)External quality assessment(EQAS)Nature Concurrent and continuous Retrospective /prospective andperiodicPerformed by Laboratory staff Independent agencyObjective2.1.4 Expected outcomeProvide reliable result onday to day basisThe expected outcome of a QA programme are as follows:Ensure inter-laboratory comparabilityand assesses proficiency ofparticipating lab.• generation and provision of a standardized laboratory service for malariadiagnostics• reliability of laboratory results, thereby helping the physician in establishingproper and rapid diagnosis, leading to better management of patients• creation of a good reputation for the laboratory• enhancing motivation of staff• accreditation of laboratories2.2 Standard operating procedures in malaria diagnosisThe Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is the most important document in a laboratory. Itdescribes in detail the complete procedure for performing tests and ensures that consistentand reproducible results are generated. The instructions given in a SOP must be strictlyadhered to by all those who are related with the functioning of the laboratory. The importantfactors in respect to the SOP are depicted in Figure 2.SOP – Malaria Microscopy© Copyright to Dte. NVBDCP Only.
