Quality Assurance of <strong>Malaria</strong> Diagnostic tests• Follow the following steps for preparation of the blood smeari. select the second or third finger of the left handii. the site of the puncture is the side of the ball of thefinger, not too close to the nail bediii. allow the blood come up automatically. Do not squeeze thefinger.iv. hold the slide by its edgesv. the size of the blood drop is controlled better if the fingertouches the slides from belowvi. touch the drop of blood with a clean slide, three drops arecollected for preparing the thick smear.vii. touch another new drop of blood with the edge of a cleanslide for preparing the thin smear.viii. spread the drop of blood with the corner of another slide tomake a circle or a square about 1 cmix. bring the edge of the slide carrying the second drop of bloodto the surface of the first slide, wait until the blood spreadsalong the whole edgex. holding it at an angle of about 45 o push it forward with rapidbut not too brisk movementxi. write with a pencil the slide number on thethin film, Wait until the thick film is dry<strong>SOP</strong> – <strong>Malaria</strong> <strong>Microscopy</strong>© Copyright to Dte. <strong>NVBDCP</strong> Only.
