SwimmingJeffrey, Dur bahn Watt, SetterholmCoulterPeople the world over say, “Gee but it’s hottoday ! Let’s go swimming.” But NorthwestSchool students say, “How cold is it? Is it onlyfifty one below? Say, I wonder if we can goswimming today?” Such are the many conimentsmade by students, without realizing howfortunate they are in having an indoor swimmingpool. Everybody around here thinks it’s a greatplace, including the faculty.Under the supervision of Mr. Christgau andMiss Kingston, the Frosh learn their A-R-C’s inthe art of swimming. New students soon learnthat nothing serious is going to happen when MrChristgau takes a high dive into the pool. Histalent in swimming gives them confidence in hisability as an instructor. Second and third yearstudents get the necessary information on diving.dead men’s float and life saving. The four girls who have won Junior Life SavingEmblems are Bernadette Jeffrey, VirginiaWatt, Patricia Durbahn and Dorothy Setterholm. These emblems are given to only those who areable to pass all of the necessary swimming andlife saving tests. Our gymnasium and swimming pool were builtin 1930, and during the years the swimming poolhas been in use, there have been no casualties, dueto the pool regulations which are enforced by theinstructors of all the swimming classes. Regularswimming classes are held twice during the week.In addition to the regular swimming classes thereare two free swimming periods a week for theboys, which are always well attended. At the endof each year an inter-class swimming meet is held. The girls’ swimming meet is generally held in theafternoon and the boys’ in the evening of the lastFriday of the school year. It is at these swimmingmeets that the swimmers get a chance to“strut their stuff” and to show what they havelearned during the year in the way of the fancydives, backstrokes, sidestrokes, floats and longdistance swimming. The swimming pool is perhaps more valuablethan any other equipment on our campus, becauseit furnishes a recreational pastime that is not onlyinteresting, but one that is enjoyed by people allover the nation.Page 28
