Crop JudgingThe ability to judge farmcrops is very useful to anyonewho intends to be a farmer.For twelve years the annualCrops Judging contest hasbeen a part of the WinterShows. Six schools participatedin this contest with theNorth Central School ofMr. Clark Grand Rapids winning firstplace, our school won second place, while theWest Central School of Morris got third place,with St. Paul fourth and the Agriculture Schoolof Park River, North Dakota in fifth place. TheSchool of Agriculture at Brookings, South Dakotafinished in last place.Members of the Crops Judging team are RayHiggin, Morris Hanson and Wilson Radway. Inthe entire contest Morris Hanson won third placewith nineteen hundred and twenty points, whileRay Higgin got seventh place with eighteen hundredeighty seven points. Wilson Radway finishedin tenth place with eighteen hundred elevenpoints. Each team is required to identify onehundred and fifty specimens of grain and foragevarieties, potatoes, plant diseases and farm weeds.They are also required to judge six differentclasses of wheat, oats, barley, flax, sweet cloverand alfalfa seeds.The Crops Judging squad is selected on acompetitive basis from the students enrolled inthe advanced crop judging class during the fallterm by Coach E. R. Clark. The team has aboutsix to eight weeks practice before the contesttakes place. Other members of the squad, whogave the team competition are Roy Carlson, GlennMellesmoen and Daniel Wavra. If our team hadwon the cup this year it would have been theirspermanently, as any team winning the cup threeyears straight are allowed to keep it. We hadwon it the two years preceding this one.Our team has won the silver trophy five timesout of the twelve contests which have been held.Mr. E. R. Clark was coach of four of the winningteams while Mr. R. S. Dunham has coachedone. in 1932. The West Central School hasbeen winners of the cup three times while theNorth Central School has won first four timesout of the twelve contests.The SquadLeft to Right : Wavra Mellesmoen, Higgin, Carlson, Hanson, Radway.Page 46
