Campus MachinesGrace NotesIf human bodies may be compared to machinesand engines, then what wonderful ones we haveon this campus. They come in packages underthe name of “Faculty Members”. Among thevarious types we have one huge and powerfulsteam engine that unvaryingly is set at a low rateof speed. We have another which is a small.delicate engine which travels at a very fast pace.Another is a large, nice-looking Diesel which alwayshums along at a regular speed. with i i ~levers to change it. Rut there are two whichseem terribly important on the campus. Theyrun at a terrific rate, sputtering wildly at alltimes. The mechanic ref rains from putting amuffler or brake on either machine for he swearsit will be injurious to the mechanism.These two are as you may already haveguessed, Miss Bede and Mr. Mlinar. What Iwant most to do now is to make it known toeveryone that in the early part of November thesetwo mechanical personages were effectually quietedfor exactly seven minutes. Previous to theseseven minutes, the two of them had been conversingso intensely that they had forgotten thatthe Home Management girls had invited themto dinner with the purpose of giving them fuelfor their engines. The other eaters became sowild-eyed and so apprehensive of a combat thatone of the-(ask Ivy, Delene. Janet. Woodrow.Marshall, Jimmy and Phil for the rest).Dissertation Upon GrapefruitRow Tie came to our country from China withhis mother and his father. the White Ties. Bysome miracle they got by Immigrant Island.Bow Tie and a pal of his spent most of theirtime playing “pong-pong.” Pong-pong was agame of early America, very similar to our modern“ping-pong” only it was played outside ona court similar to a tennis court. Like a tenniscourt it had a net strung across the middle. Eachplayer had a paddle. A hall about three inchesin diameter was used. The object of the gamewas to hit the hall back to the opponent withoutits touching the ground.On this particular day, as so often happens,there was an argument between the two over theruling of a certain play. The argument woundup in a brief but bloody fight. In the duel thehall was torn and Row Tie cut his finger on hisopponent’s suspender buckle. The torn ball wasthe most disastrous. They could not play pongpongwithout a hall.Bow Tie was struck by an idea. His mother’shat, as was the fashion of the day, was deckedwith an assortment of colorful fruits; some ofthem were nice and big and round, very similarto the pong-pong ball commonly known as grapefruit.The pong-pong fiend decided to borrowone of them for just a short time.T he first whack proved that there would beno more pong-pong played that day. The grapefruitburst wide open.Conscious of a red hot paddling that was duehim, Bow Tie picked up the shattered fruit withhopes of mending it. In picking it up his cutfinger was thrust into the very acid juice. Thestinging pain and his animal instinct suffered himto soothe it with his tongue. The peculiar, stillpleasing taste caused him to forget his hurt, andsecure more of the delicious juice.Eager to have his mother share his discovery,and hoping that she would forgive him, he sharedthe luscious fruit with her. She became evenmore enthusiastic than he. Before they finishedthey had stripped the hat of its beautiful fruit.The next day Mrs. White Tie bought one hundredhats and threw a big party. Before a secondnight fell every one in the village had boughtnew hats. In the backyards were scattered newhats stripped of their decorations.Ray HigqinPage 71

One who knows he knows.Stall-A good recitation from an empty mind.Teacher-Member of an in-humane society.Vanity-Noticeable among Juniors.Veranda-An open enclosure used as a spoon-holder.Wise--A Junior’s conception of himself.Zero--Evidence of a teacher’s had Junior.
