Nabben, Miss Nelson, accompanist, Ingebretson. The Boys’ Glee Club is one of the outstandingmusical activities in the Northwest School. Thisis under the leadership of Miss Hennig. Theboys who are interested in singing have the opportunityof joining. The groups have their practicesweekly. By the excellent leadership of theinstructor the Glee Club is able to perform withharmony. The singing group is presented at annualevents during the school term. The importantevents are Parents’ Day, Thanksgiving, WinterShows and Commencement. The songs which the boys are singing this yearare, Short’nin Bread by Wolfe, Water Boy byPitcher Ave Maria Stella by Grieg, and ItalianStreet Song by Victor HerbertThe Boys’ Glee Club meets every Friday forenoonat 11 :40, or rather are supposed to meetthen. It seems funny that there are so many excusesfor not being on time. There are many interestingthings that occur during that period. Ifyou happen to chew gum you are sure to lose itif Miss Henning sees you chewing and trying tosing at the same time. When a person walks around the campus orby the dormitories, there is a lot of singing andloud too, but it seems so funny that as soon asthey come to practice, everyone is so timid andthey don’t seem to be able to make up their mindwhether they dare open their mouths or not.It seem funny that the basses always take thelast row of seats when there are other seats closerto the front. They know that they have to moveup anyway. Maybe they think they can sing bettersitting there. After singing the song over a few times MissHennig asks if they know their part and they allthink they do, but when she hears them singwithout her accompaniment she knows different.Oh, well it’s all in a lifetime. We all can not beprof essional singers. If we put all the great benefits we derive fromthis class in a nut shell, we must say that we enjoyit very much and most of all we salute MissHennig, our instructor.Page 37

Evans, Durbahn, Olson, Ingebretson, Lerud, Lokken, Miss Hennig, director, Miss Nelson, accompanist ; A.Olson, Lindamood. At 11 :40 every Wednesday, we see studentsstreaming into the music room on second floor ofHome Economics for the weekly meeting of theMixed Chorus.Year after year we go through the same ordealof entering Mixed Chorus. In the fall, tryoutsare held (usually in the auditorium) where wetry in vain to carry a tune. From the girls wehear, “do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do,” and from theboys, “My Country ’Tis of Thee.” We are impressedwith the fact that there is a wide rangeof notes and voices in this universe. Several dayslater a notice is posted telling us who successfullypassed the test. At the first meeting of theyear, the officers are elected. They are president, secretary, and librarian. The brunt of the burdenrests on the librarian, who distributes and collectsthe music at each meeting.During the three years that we have beenmembers of this organization we have had as ourinstructor, Miss Katherine Hennig. Miss MarianNelson, our pianist, has been with us for twoyears. This has been an interesting and satisfactoryyear to the Mixed Chorus. Last fall, we choseas our officers, President, Chester IngebretsonSecretary, Ruth Lerud ; Lynn Lokken, Librarian.During the course of the year we have renderedseveral songs. Last fall, we began our workon “Goin’ Home,” by Dvorak and continued with“Hallelujah Chorus” by Handel and “WinterSong,” by Hallock. These three songs we completedbefore Christmas and rendered them atvarious intervals throughout our fall term. After Christmas we have been working on“Still As the Night,” by Bohm, and “Oh BlestAre They,” by Tchaikowsky. Some of the occasions at which we sing areParent’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Graduation andBaccalaureate Services.Mixed Chorus may mean to some, drudgeryand less free time, but if one stops to think whatbenefits are derived from this brief practice periodonce a week I think he will agree with methat it is certainly worthwhile. To hear a chorus of mixed voices properlytrained is beautiful, and to be able to belong tosuch an organization is a great satisfaction. In closing we wish to refresh the minds ofold members and whisper a warning to prospectivemembers.‘‘Remember, Class starts at 11 :40.”Page 35
