OrchestraStanding-: Lindamood, M. Nelson Ingebretson, Isaacson, Miss Nelson, director.Seated: Miss Warne, R. Nelson, Miss Hennig, Lokken, Iverson, Wavra, Lerud.Music is not an ornament in life. but has asvital and serious a part to play as religion or philosophy. It may truly be said, “a progressivecommunity is a music-loving community.”schools and colleges music not only serves as ameans of recreation, hut it is also one of the essentialsfor developing school spirit. That music is appreciated, and that it is anessential part of school life is shown by the factthat our music department is called upon duringthe year to assist other departments and organizationsin their programs. It has always been the purpose of this institutionto develop a liking for music, and this year.through the untiring efforts of the music faculty.it has made wonderful progress. One of the major organizations at this schoolis the orchestra. Under the expert leadership ofMiss Marian Nelson, instructor in piano. the or-chestra has made remarkable progress and hasperformed on numerous programs during theyear. At our first rehearsal the orchestra soundedInmore like an amateur jam session, but as timepassed. and because of the patient efforts of ourleader, we’ve progressed so that we are not quiteas skeptical about giving an actual rendition inpublic. We’ve had a limited repertoire, of course, hutwe have played Shubert. Haydn, Tchaikowskyand others-everything but “swing”; yet eventhat would creep in occasionally. The orchestra enables students to discover tal-ents that previously had not been recognized.Who knows how many Kreislers, or maybe Du-chins and Rubinoffs, are among us.Interesting and instructive have been our orchestrarehearsals; and to you who play musicalinstruments and who will have to make up theorchestra in years to come. we suggest that youcome to practice some night and listen in. It’s agreat deal of fun and very worth-while. For alwayswill music play a part in every program.Other fads and ideas in programs come and go.but never will anything ever take the place musichas made in the hearts of our people.Page 39
