The Song ContestEach year in December. the student body atthe Northwest School looks forward to one ofthe most interesting of inter-class events, the annualsong contest, which is held prior to theChristmas vacation period. This is the only interclassevent in which the entire student body isable to take part ; hence much spirit and interestare shown on this occasion.Alumni and former students all over NorthwesternMinnesota remember the song contest asone of the outstanding events of the year. Thefirst song contest at the Northwest School washeld in 1917 and proved such a big success thatit has become one of the traditions of this school.In the 1936 contest, which was the nineteenthannual event, the Advanced class, led by RuthLerud of Twin Valley. captured first place andwas awarded the C. G. Selvig trophy. which ispresented to the winning class each year. TheSenior class, led by Lynn Lokken of Shelly.ranked a close second, while the Freshmen, directedby Marvin Hilmo of Twin Valley. wonthird place. The Junior class, under the directionof Lloyal Harris of Wadena, finished in fourthplace. On the night of the contest Miss MarianNelson. instructor in piano. was the accompanistfor all classes. During rehearsals each class wasaccompanied by one of its own members. Classaccompanists were : Seniors, Delene Hegreberg ofAda; Advanced, Betty McVeety of East GrandForks ; Juniors, Mildred Mykleby of EldredFreshmen, Evelyn Brandt of Gonvick.Each class sang three songs. One song, “RattleHymn of the Republic,” was sung by all fourclasses. while the other two were of the classes’own choosing. The Seniors selected “WhileShepherds Watched” and “In The Gloaming” ;the Advanced chose “Silent Night, Holy Night”Betty McVeety, Ruth Lerudand the “Cradle Song”. The Juniors sang “Bellsof St. Mary’s’’ and ‘‘Silent Night, Holy Night,”while the Freshmen chose “Jingle Bells” and“Flow Gently Sweet Afton.”Members of the music faculty took charge ofthe contest and supervised all of the daily rehearsals.Since 1917 there have been nineteencontests sponsored and Senior classes have capturedfirst place nine times, while the Advancedclasses have won first place eight times.
