Specific milestoneswhere awareness is lacking can be seen in the above Table.10.1.9 Monitoring & Supervision of the AWCsSeveral questions were asked as to how the supervisors monitor the work of AWWs. It ismostly done through the monthly reports which are received regularly.10.1.10 Assessment of the supervisors’ knowledge on various aspects of growthand development of childrenThe supervisors were given an assessment sheet with some open ended and some closeended questions to assess their knowledge of different aspects of growth and development ofchildren. They were expected to answer all those questions either by writing some shortpoints or by marking multiple choice questions. This section presents analysis of theirresponses.1. When asked about key important needs of children and their caregivers, themajority of responses were like these:Key important needs reported by more than 50% respondents—large to smallfor children : 1.Immunization, 2.Nutritious food, 3.Informal educationFor caregivers: No need was reported by more than 50% respondents.While children’s needs were known to the supervisors but they lacked knowledge of theneeds of their mothers/caregivers.2. When asked about the needs of children for their growth and development intohappy and healthy children, the majority of responses were the same as importantneeds, reported above, but none of these responses reached 50% level. Two importantneeds described were nutritious food (6 out of 13 supervisors) and availability of playitems (5 out of 13).3. When supervisors were asked whether there is any relationship of health and nutrition tophysical, language, and the cognitive development of children, most of them answeredin affirmative but they could not articulate/describe how good health/ nutrition affectsdevelopment and growth of children.4. The supervisors were asked features of the child-centred pre-school education,most of them reported correctly that the children “should be engaged in different kinds ofactivities”, ‘Children should be divided as per age” and “Child developed materials shouldbe displayed in the AWC”.5. Most of the supervisors could list different areas of child development correctly.6. When supervisors were asked whether they new about rights of children. Only 62 percentreported in affirmative. When further asked to report those rights, only three rights,namely, “nutritious food”, “immunization” and “health check ups were reported by morethan 50% supervisors.7. In addition, the supervisors were asked to answer several questions with multiple choiceanswers to assess their knowledge on ANC, right breast feeding practices and possibleproblems of neonatal death.
