is certified by the German Federal Association of <strong>Mediation</strong> (BM) as a mediator <strong>and</strong> mediation trainer, <strong>and</strong>has been co-directing inmedio for over ten years. Dirk mediates in various contexts (community, business, international NGOs <strong>and</strong>relief agencies) but also designs <strong>and</strong> implements conflict-management systems for bigger organisations: among them hospitals,large enterprises <strong>and</strong> public administrations. He also provides mediation training to post-graduate programmes in German <strong>and</strong>Swiss universities. As a short-term consultant he is involved in development cooperation <strong>and</strong> peace-building projects in civil-warstricken countries, as well as countries or regions with strong internal ethno-political conflicts. Dirk has conducted team-building,mediation, conflict-resolution <strong>and</strong> dialogue workshops in Palestine, Turkey, Kosovo, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Ethiopia <strong>and</strong>Kenya, <strong>and</strong> is a member of the Reflecting-on-Peace-Practices Learning Community of the Collaborative for Development Actionin Boston, Massachusetts.is a GIZ CPS national peace expert in the function of programme manager to the Oromia PastoralistAssociation (OPA). He joined CPS in 2010 <strong>and</strong> was first assigned to the HoF where he initiated the HoF’s strategic engagementinto conflict prevention <strong>and</strong> resolution. Before joining CPS, Gemechu worked in the civil society sector with various local NGOs,most notably with the Research Centre for Human Rights <strong>and</strong> Civic Education (ReCHRCE).is a mediation trainer certified by the German <strong>and</strong> Austrian federal mediation associations, <strong>and</strong> hasover 15 years experience in mediation practice <strong>and</strong> training. She co-directed 200-hour mediation courses in cooperation with theSwiss Development Cooperation <strong>and</strong> the University of Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerl<strong>and</strong> for many years. In 1998,Ljubjana co-founded inmedio. She has worked with diverse clients, target groups <strong>and</strong> cultures ranging from violent youths,teachers <strong>and</strong> social workers to business people, diplomats <strong>and</strong> armed rebel group proxies. Among others, she developed so-called“bridge-building” trainings for multi-ethnic war refugee groups from the Western Balkans <strong>and</strong> was instrumental in developing theBM’s st<strong>and</strong>ards for professional mediation as well as its certification procedure.has a professional background as a lawyer with a focus on public international <strong>and</strong> European law. Maikealso successfully completed the nine-week qualification course at the Academy for Conflict Transformation of the Forum CivilPeace Service in Bonn, Germany, <strong>and</strong> is a certificated peace <strong>and</strong> conflict consultant. She has been with GIZ CPS Ethiopia forover three years; for half of this time as peace expert for networking, project planning, monitoring <strong>and</strong> evaluation <strong>and</strong> knowledgemanagement. She was also heavily involved in the conceptualisation <strong>and</strong> facilitation of the <strong>Mediation</strong> Qualification Programme.Acknowledgements105
