Theperiod, which is essential to an understandingof Western society, can best be approachedthrough a combination of several disciplines.Collaboration by the departments of English,history, and the history of art allows just such acourse of study.In the Middle Ages, after the collapse ofthe Roman Empire, many of the legacies ofancient Rome were adapted in response tonew ideas introduced by the expanding influenceof Germanic, Celtic, and Mediterraneancultures. We will focus on the socio-political,economic, and cultural interactions of thesecultures throughout the medieval period, duringwhich the linguistic and geographic patternsof Europe we recognize today emerged.
