2010-2011 Catalog The academic progress of all students shallbe monitored twice a year by the EligibilityCommittee. The status of a student, who atthe beginning of the academic year, has failedto demonstrate satisfactory progress towardthe degree shall be reviewed by the EligibilityCommittee, who shall place her on warning,probation, or declare her ineligible to continueat the college.Examinations are given in all courses at the endof each term, unless the instructor decides uponsome other means of assessment. Students selfscheduletheir examinations within the periodprovided in the official calendar for the term.All tests and examinations are given under theHonor System. Violation of its requirementsconstitutes a serious offense.Students, both new and returning, must completetheir registration for courses on the datesspecified by the Registrar’s Office each year.To carry more than 18 credit hours persemester, a student must have special permissionfrom her advisor and the Dean.A student who wishes to withdraw from collegeduring the academic year must present to theDean the written approval of her parents orguardian stating the reasons for withdrawal andmust clear all financial obligations before hertranscripts will be released.The <strong>College</strong> reserves the right to exclude at anytime any student whose conduct or academicstanding it regards as unsatisfactory.Readmission after withdrawal from <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>is not automatic. To request readmission, studentsshould write to the Dean of the <strong>College</strong>.<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> is a student-centered collegethat values student participation in asignificant constellation of learning experiences.A student who chooses to study at <strong>Sweet</strong><strong>Briar</strong> should understand that she is electing tocome to a college of liberal arts and sciences,and that earning its degree requires a certaindepth and breadth in her selection of courses.Working with her academic advisor, a studentwill plan her academic program to coverrequired skills, experiences, and knowledgeareas, as well as to fulfill her particular needsand interests.<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> confers three undergraduatedegrees, the Bachelor of Arts, theBachelor of Science, and the Bachelor of FineArts. The Bachelor of Arts is available to all students;the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelorof Arts may be elected by students who majorin the departments of biology, chemistry, environmentalstudies, mathematical and computersciences, physics and engineering, orpsychology. These departments list the specificrequirements for each degree in the <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong><strong>College</strong> Catalog. The Bachelor of Fine Arts isavailable to students admitted to the fine artsprogram.All candidates for a degree must meet graduationrequirements, complete the GeneralEducation Program requirements, and satisfyspecific requirements for a major program.Each student is responsible for knowing the<strong>College</strong>’s requirements and for planning heracademic program to meet those requirements.Requests for exceptions to the requirementsfor the degree may be referred by the Dean ofthe <strong>College</strong> to the Eligibility Committee forconsideration.
