2010-2011 Catalog The Alpha Lambda Delta Award is given tothe graduating Alpha Lambda Delta memberwho has the highest cumulative grade pointaverage at the end of the first grading period ofthe senior year.The Alumna Daughter Award was establishedin 1974 by the Executive Board of the AlumnaeAssociation to honor an alumna daughter ineither the junior or senior class who has demonstratedat Sweet Briar the traditions of soundlearning and social responsibility which havecharacterized the alumnae of the College sinceits founding.The Mary Kendrick Benedict Award wasestablished in 1945 by former students, colleagues,and other friends of Dr. Mary KendrickBenedict, the first president of Sweet BriarCollege, to honor an upperclass student of highacademic standing and personal integrity whohas shown a purpose for service in her collegeexperience.The “Big Sister” Award, donated by SweetBriar alumna who teach in the Tye RiverElementary School in Nelson County, is givento a member of the senior class who has showna commitment to community service by contributingto the educational and emotionalgrowth of the children at Tye River ElementarySchool. The recipient gives valuable time andmakes a positive difference in the lives of theseyoung people.The Myron B. Bloy, Jr. Service Fellowship wasestablished by friends of the late Chaplain Bloyto enable a current Sweet Briar student to workin a service-oriented, off-campus situation inthis country or abroad.The Jean Besselievre Boley Fund was establishedby the parents and husband of JeanBesselievre Boley ’35 to encourage interest increative writing. The fund provides a prizefor the student submitting the best short storyentered in the annual competition. It may alsoprovide a grant-in-aid for a junior or seniorwith demonstrated ability in creative writingwho requires financial assistance.The Laura Buckham Book Award was establishedby the friends of the late Laura Buckham,professor of French at Sweet Briar for 32 years.The award is presented to a rising junior whois a French major in recognition of excellencein French.The Marcia Capron Award was establishedby John D. Capron in honor of his wife. Thisaward is given to a senior for excellence inFrench.The Julia Sadler de Coligny Award providesan annual prize to outstanding majors in musicand English in alternate years.The Penelope Czarra Award was establishedby the parents of Penelope Lane Czarra ’75 tohonor the senior who best combines scholasticachievement, student leadership, and effectivecontributions to the improvement of the qualityof student life at Sweet Briar.The Juliet Halliburton Davis Award recognizesan outstanding major in environmentalscience and in environmental studies for theiracademic achievement, leadership, and serviceto the Environmental Studies department.The Judith Molinar Elkins Prize, was establishedby her family in honor of ProfessorElkins, Professor of Mathematics. This awardrecognizes the outstanding achievements of asenior majoring in the mathematical, physical,or biological sciences, actively participating inthe college community, and demonstrating theideals and dedication to learning exemplified bythe life of Professor Elkins.The Helen McClure Gager Award inChemistry was established by the husband,family, and friends of Helen Gager, associateprofessor of chemistry, who taught at SweetBriar from 1976 to 1980. The award recognizesa member of the Sweet Briar community—student,faculty, or other—who has done distinguishedwork in the field of chemistry.
