The following exceptionsapply:- A student may substitute a 100-level coursefor a 200-level course if the course is taken inthe student’s first or second year.- A student may elect to take the four-creditsenior exercise in English (both ENGL 451and ENGL 452) in place of one 300-levelliterature course. Working closely with her advisor, eachstudent should seek to construct a plan for themajor that includes the following approachesto literary study:1. Historical — These courses will highlight theconstruction of literary traditions in differentperiods.2. Critical and/or theoretical — These courseswill foreground the study and use of a varietyof models of literary interpretation.3. Transnational — These courses will involve asignificant focus on the study of literary textsand traditions from other countries in relationto those of England and the United States.4. Formal — These courses will foreground thestudy of different genres and their conventions.5. Social — These courses will foreground thestudy of literature’s relationship to identitycategories such as those based on class, race,ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.More details about the five approaches toliterary study listed above can be found onthe English department website and can berequested from the chair of the English department.Some courses may be featured undermore than on category.
