<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>The German Embassy Book Prize is awardedat commencement to a student who has anexcellent academic record and has made significantcontributions to the German Programat <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>.The Gill Scholarship, funded by Betty ByrneGill Ware ’55, in honor of her parents, Dr. andMrs. Elbyrne Grady Gill, is presented to a risingjunior or senior for their achievements in theenvironmental sciences or studies program andtheir interest in protecting the environment.The Goethe-Institut Buchpreis, provided bythe Goethe-Institut in Washington, is awardedat commencement to an outstanding seniormajoring in German or German Studies.Nicole Greenleaf Service in Education Award,named in honor of Nicole Clara MichelleGreenleaf, Class of 2003, honors a senior in theTeacher Education program who has demonstratedscholastic achievement and whose volunteerservice in support of a struggling studentin a local public school has been an inspirationto that student’s school community.The Connie M. Guion Award was establishedin honor of Professor Guion by Mr. and Mrs.J. Wilson Newman and their daughters, ClareNewman Blanchard ’60, and Mildred NewmanThayer ’61. It is given to a member of the graduatingclass “for excellence as a human beingand as a member of the <strong>College</strong>.”The Milan Hapala Scholarship is awarded toa junior majoring in International Affairs orGovernment and wishes to study in the CzechRepublic.The Kathryn Haw Prize in Art History wasestablished by the Art History Departmentwith support provided by Kathryn Haw ’92in recognition of the quality of education shereceived. It is awarded to a graduating art historymajor who has demonstrated excellence bymaintaining a grade point average of at least 3.5in her major.The James Lewis Howe Award in Chemistry,sponsored by the Blue Ridge Section of theAmerican Chemical Society, is awarded to asenior for excellence in chemistry. This awardis presented to the recipient in April at a meetingof the Blue Ridge Section of the AmericanChemical Society.Kenmore Merit Scholarship is awarded toa junior or senior who has maintained a 3.3grade point average and who is recognizedby the faculty of the government program foracademic excellence.L’Alliance Française Prize, established by theLynchburg, VA, chapter, is presented to asenior nominated by the Modern Languagesand Literatures Department for excellence inFrench language and literature.The George H. Lenz Excellence in PhysicsAward is given to a senior physics major orminor who has shown dedication and successin the pursuit of learning physics. The winnerof this award excels both in theoretical andexperimental physics and exemplifies ProfessorLenz’s excitement for understanding physics.The naming of this award honors ProfessorLenz’s significant contributions to the physicsdepartment, where he taught from 1970 to2004.Rebecca Tomlinson Lindblom Award,which was established by Reverend WilliamL. Lindblom in honor of his wife, is given to astudent or students who demonstrate academicexcellence in philosophy and religion as wellas in the application of their principles to dailyliving.The Manson Memorial Alumnae Award wasestablished by the alumnae in memory of N. C.Manson, Jr., to give recognition each year to anupperclass student of high academic standingwho shows qualities of leadership and makes aconstructive contribution to student life.The Mathematical Sciences Award is awardedto a graduating Mathematical Sciences majorwho has demonstrated excellence by achieving
