Three hours lecture.Offered alternate years.An independent research project selected and carriedout in consultation with a faculty sponsor.Required of senior majors in chemistry. Bachelorof Science candidates will conduct a laboratoryinvestigation; Bachelor of Arts candidates may electa library project. A written report and an oral presentationare required. III.O, III.W.Prerequisites: One 100-level CHEM course,CHEM 232, and permission of the instructor.Pursuit of an upper level research project determinedin advance by the student in consultationwith a faculty member who will act as the sponsor.A nominal lab fee may be required for this course.Classics, Philosophy, and Religion representthree of the central disciplines in a traditionalliberal arts curriculum. By combiningthese three allied areas of inquiry, studentswill be able to gain a more comprehensive andwell-grounded appreciation for many of thefundamental insights into human experienceacross a wide variety of cultures, institutions,and times. While each major within the departmentretains its own distinctive methodologiesand areas of inquiry, all three disciplines sharea commitment to the exploration of cultureand ideas through varied historical and criticalperspectives. The department offers major andminor programs in each discipline.Classics seeks to provide any student with aliberal and comprehensive view of the ancientworld through firsthand contact with the Greekand Roman roots of Western civilization.Courses in Greek and Latin are designed todevelop competence in the classical languagesand to survey the ancient world through itsgreatest works of literature. Other courses, inwhich the readings are in English translation,offer a wider conspectus in classical literature,civilization, mythology, and history. Thedepartment is interested both in students whowish to do their major work in classical studiesand in students who wish to relate the studyof an ancient literature to modern literatureor an allied subject. Allied subjects regularlyinclude art, English, history, modern languagesand literatures, philosophy, and religion. Thedepartment offers a major with a choice of twoconcentrations, Classical Language or ClassicalCivilization.Majors considering study abroad duringtheir junior year are encouraged to apply to theIntercollegiate Center for Classical Studies inRome or to the <strong>College</strong> Year in Athens whichoffer instruction in the classical languages,ancient history, and ancient art, and whichsponsor a series of trips to important museumsand archaeological sites. The department is acontributing member of the American Schoolof Classical Studies at Athens, which offerssummer sessions designed to provide advancedstudents with a deepened understanding ofGreece and its antiquities through study of itsmonuments, history, literature and culture.Philosophy is primarily something one does.At <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>, students are involved directly inthe process of exploring and developing ideasin the context of an intense encounter withthe faculty, other students, and the writings ofthose philosophers widely acknowledged to beprofound, provocative, or both. The studentwill study philosophy by being a philosopher,and as such, will be engaged in a search for thedefinition, expansion, and deepening of herown world view.
