Sweet Briar Collegelaboratories teach students to become chemists. These labs present opportunities for studentsto design their own experiments and experiencethe excitement of discovery. Beginning inintroductory courses, students gain experiencewith sophisticated, research-quality equipment. As students progress, projects deal withmore complex chemical questions and requirehands-on problem-solving and extensivedata analysis. Chemistry and BIOC studentslearn to present their results in both writtenand oral form. Students are challenged todevelop excellent problem-solving skills, bothin their coursework and in the laboratory, and to become adept at using professionalinstrumentation and computer software. Theculmination of both the chemistry and theBIOC major is the completion of a semesterlongindependent project. It is strongly recommendedthat a student considering a major inchemistry or biochemistry/molecular biologycomplete CHEM 131, CHEM 141, CHEM 252,CHEM 253, MATH 123, and MATH 124 by theend of her first year. Prospective majors shouldconsult with the department before registeringfor sophomore courses.(49-50 semester hours)CHEM 131 (4) -General ChemistryCHEM 141 (1) -General Chemistry LabCHEM 216 (3) -Analytical ChemistryCHEM 226 (1) -Environmental AnalyticalChemistry LabCHEM 231 (4) -Organic Chemistry ICHEM 232 (4) -Organic Chemistry IICHEM 233 (1) -Organic Chemistry I LabCHEM 234 (1) -Organic Chemistry II LabCHEM 252 (4) -Introduction to Quantitativeand Inorganic ChemistryCHEM 253 (1) -Introduction to Quantitativeand Inorganic ChemistryLaboratoryCHEM 341 (3) -Intermediate Laboratory IMATH 123 (4) -Calculus IMATH 124 (4) -Calculus IICHEM 451 (3) -Senior ResearchCHEM 202 (3) -The Biochemistry of HumanNutritionCHEM 321 (3) -Biochemistry ICHEM 322 (3) -Biochemistry IICHEM 331 (3) -Physical Chemistry:Quantum Mechanics andSpectroscopyCHEM 332 (3) -Physical Chemistry: Kineticsand ThermodynamicsCHEM 431 (3) -Instrumental AnalysisCHEM 432 (3) -Advanced Inorganic ChemistryCHEM 450 (3) -Advanced Organic ChemistryPHYS 171 (4) -General Physics IPHYS 172 (4) -General Physics IIPHYS 171 (4) -General Physics IPHYS 122 (3) -Algebra-basedElectromagnetism and Optics With permission of the department, onecourse in physics at the 200, 300, or 400 level or onecourse in molecular biology at the 300 or 400 levelmay be used in place of one course in chemistry.(60 semester hours)CHEM 131 (4) -General ChemistryCHEM 141 (1) -General Chemistry Lab
