If the patient is lying down with their eyes closed then psychedelics willproduce a trance state fairly reliably on their own; the shaman does notneed to do much more than measure an accurate dose and provide asafe place for quiet reflection. But aside from treating patients theshaman also leads group bonding rituals, and these group rituals utilizesimilar hypnotic entrainment technologies.Typical shamanic entrainment technology may include drums,chants, music, strobe lights, chimes, audio pulses, and talk routineswhich guide the ritual participants into a shared trance. NativeAmerican peyote rituals use the beat of a medicine drum as thesynchronous driver for the baseline trance, and then layer that withvocal drones to create resonant drivers which maximize brain waveamplitude and global coherence in the group circuit. Discussion ofperiodic resonant oscillators and entrainment is essentially a physicsbaseddeconstruction of music’s power to induce and lock targetedmind states, which is something we all instinctively understand fromthe experience of listening to music. However, when you look at thisdynamic from a physical standpoint, when the mind is entranced by anentrainment technology such as music, the mind and the music mergefrom separate individual oscillators into a standing harmonicinterference pattern with its own unique properties. The mathematicalimplication of this is interesting enough, but the physical implication ismore intriguing; music and mind spontaneously couple.In traditional Amazonian ayahuasca ceremonies, the shaman maybe blessed with an icaro, or a sacred song which is deliveredspontaneously into the brain by the spirits. When the shaman sings thissacred song the ritual participants are quickly ushered into the sacredspace along with the shaman. Using the entrainment dynamic it isreasonable to assume to that these icaros are feedback vocalizationstuned to the resonant frequency of the specific trance state occupied bythe shaman. The shaman hears the resonant frequencies in his head ashallucinogenic artifacts of the phase transitions happening within hisneural oscillators, and when he vocalizes these noises they come out aspitched micro-tones, often layered with vibratos coming from the noseand throat. By layering resonant multi-tones into the sacred song theshaman increases the amplitude and entrainment power of his neural
and vocal oscillators. If the shaman and the ritual participants all singthe same tones together, their oscillators all merge into a constructiveinterference pattern and drive each other into a higher amplitude ofshared energy.
