It maybe decades before such research becomes available, and even when it isavailable there is no guarantee it will be conclusive.Because psychedelics are non-specific amplifiers and can producemultiple outcomes based on initial conditions of dose, set, and setting,the concept of scanning brains to provide a single unified definition ofan expanded state of consciousness may be inherently flawed.Psychedelics can demonstrably induce trance, catatonia, hallucination,psychosis, paranoia, mania, and euphoria all in response tounobservable conditions in set and setting, so they are demonstrablycapable of inducing nonlinear states of altered consciousness.Psychedelic amplification of perception is observably nonlinear in theform of fractal iterating multisensory hallucinations, and the nonlinearamplification of perception is observably tied to size of dose andstrength of incoming stimulus. A model where strong sensory driverscan entrain multi-stable states of nonlinear psychedelic consciousnessis a small extrapolation of these simple observations. Technically, anysong or chant produced by a shaman should entrain an organizedpsychedelic state along a range of both chaotic and multi-stable output.Studying the biofeedback equilibrium effects of spontaneous shamanicvocalization (icaros) in a live group setting may be the best startingplace for examining tones and frequencies for driving multi-stablestates for each hallucinogen at each dose range. Isolating which songsare best for producing which states at which dose range may ultimatelybe more of an art than science, relying less on statistical research andmore on the shaman’s intuitive grasp of all the sliding state variablesunique to each psychedelic session.The conclusion of PIT is that multi-stable convergence points inexpanded consciousness do exist, that they are physical in nature, and
that when a subject finds these states they are nothing less thanmagical. Finding the sweet spots in neural oscillator coherence whereconsciousness diverges and becomes complex may be elusive, or mayinvolve different indicators for each individual. General nonlineardynamics suggests that expanded states of consciousness may beachieved by nudging limit cycles of perception into period doubledbifurcations of normal output, with each period-doubling preceded bysome critical spiking activity required to drive the phase transition.Mode locking into period doubled or reverse period doubled states isthe general model of state bifurcation in dynamical systems (Fig. 30),though applying these models to perception raises some processingquestions.
