Chapter 21Spirits andSpiritual CommunionSpirit contact is a central part <strong>of</strong> many psychedelic practices. While<strong>the</strong> autonomy <strong>of</strong> spirit entities is a subject for some debate, <strong>the</strong> reports<strong>of</strong> see<strong>in</strong>g spirits under <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> psychedelics are commonenough to make some generalizations. First, psychedelic entities areanthropomorphic <strong>in</strong>terfaces through which psychedelic <strong><strong>in</strong>formation</strong> isgenerated or transmitted. Second, formal spirit types representidealized versions <strong>of</strong> specific <strong><strong>in</strong>formation</strong> matrices: cellular, <strong>in</strong>sect,plant, animal, ancestral, mythic, alien, pagan, mach<strong>in</strong>e, cosmic, and soon, and each type <strong>of</strong> spirit reveals different <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> orderednature <strong>of</strong> life and <strong>the</strong> universe. Third, psychedelic spirits are tricksters;<strong>the</strong>y <strong>of</strong>ten speak <strong>in</strong> riddles, communicate <strong>in</strong> visual rebus andpantomime, and typically never give a straight answer to <strong>in</strong>quiries.From an <strong><strong>in</strong>formation</strong> standpo<strong>in</strong>t it does not matter if <strong>the</strong> spirits are realor delusion, <strong>the</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>formation</strong> <strong>the</strong>y generate is real and can be analyzedfrom a formal perspective.Habits and Customs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SpiritsA study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature on shamanism and helper spirits tells usmany th<strong>in</strong>gs about <strong>the</strong> behaviors and habits <strong>of</strong> spirits. First, spirits donot generally like light; <strong>the</strong>y will occasionally appear <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> daytime, but<strong>the</strong>y prefer to appear <strong>in</strong> dim light, at night, <strong>in</strong> an area illum<strong>in</strong>ated onlyby candle or firelight. Second, spirits usually come only when you call<strong>the</strong>m, only after you have called <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> long moments <strong>of</strong> silencefollow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> request for <strong>the</strong>m to appear.
