The millionth record of Miller’s Chattanooga Choo Choo was
auctioned off during the President’s Birthday Ball at the
Waldorf Astoria. Miller’s band was replaced by Johnny
Long’s as theater commitments cancelled out Miller. Miller
was awarded a silver platter for selling a million copies.
This was the first time that an artist had done this since
Gene Austin’s record of My Blue Heaven. (DB, February 1,
1942)
Contrary to what the above article states Miller was at the
Waldorf Astoria for the President’s Birthday Ball Salute
but GMD does not make it clear whether it was Miller alone
or Miller with his band.
