Moonlight Serenade (Theme) Sleepy Town Train Always in My Heart - voc SN Jersey Bounce (few bars of last week’s winning tune) Kalamazoo Slumber Song (Theme) Glenn Miller and His Orchestra played for one week (closed Thursday, August 27 th ) at the Earle Theater, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They played six or seven 40 minute shows per day. The Friday evening program was reviewed in the August 29 th issue of The Billboard (this was the fourth show of the day with two more to go): “Tees off with In the Mood and then into a dance arrangement of the Rhapsody in Blue theme, followed by another swingy dish in a String of Pearls. Miller then
-475- steps off the bandstand for the first time, taking to the mike to introduce Marion Hutton, blonde and lovely in a flowing chiffon dress, to sing That’s Sabotage. Miss Hutton calls on the Modernaires, male quarter, and Tex Beneke, out of the sax section, for I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo, vocal troupe continuing with a neat novelty, Juke Box Saturday Night, which has the band doing a take on Harry James and the Modernaires adding a comedy punch in their take on the Ink Spots. Band continues the fast pace with another dish of musical jive in Tall, Fat Mama, and for a change of pace Miller brings on the new male voice with the band, Skip Nelson, whose romancy baritone registers for Skylark and, assisted by the Modernaires, for Sweet Eloise. Band rings down the rug with Anvil Chorus.” The band grossed $45,800 for the week which was $900 short of the all-time high set by Tommy Dorsey. “Such grosses are almost impossible here considering that it’s a six day week at the Earle. Moreover, it is conceded by the management that Miller would have topped $50,000 were it not for his radio commercial broadcasts from the stage Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Crowds stayed on for the broadcasts and there was practically no turnover for the radio shows, which hurt the gate.” (BB, July 25; DB, Aug. 15; FF, Aug. 29; BB, Sept. 5, 1942) While in Philadelphia Miller failed to appear as guest conductor at the USO dance on Tuesday night and was ‘too busy’ for a backstage interview with Harold Davis of WDAS. Miller also failed to appear at the Stage Door Canteen. The result was that the press attacked his actions. “That Miller had to do a repeat broadcast for the West Coast on his three Chesterfield shows precluded the possibility of any outside personals. However, nobody took the trouble to explain the situation to the groups involved, with the result that the maestro pulled out of town in the bad graces of the townfolk.” (BB, Sept. 5, 1942) The band did 40 shows while at the Earle (closed on August 23 rd -Sunday).
