Its mission is to fight poverty forlasting results and to help people help themselves andtheir environment by providing resources, sharing knowledge,building capacity, and forging partnerships in thepublic and private sectors.The Independent Evaluation GroupIMPROVING DEVELOPMENT RESULTSTHROUGH EXCELLENCE IN EVALUATIONThe Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) is anindependent unit within the World Bank Group. Itreports directly to the Board of Executive Directors, whichoversees IEG’s work through its Committee on DevelopmentEffectiveness. IEG is charged with evaluating theactivities of the World Bank (the International Bank forReconstruction and Development and the InternationalDevelopment Association), the work of the InternationalFinance Corporation in private sector development, andthe guarantee projects and services of the MultilateralInvestment Guarantee Agency.The goals of evaluation are to learn from experience, toprovide an objective basis for assessing the results of theBank Group’s work, and to provide accountability in theachievement of its objectives. It also improves Bank Groupwork by identifying and disseminating the lessons learnedfrom experience and by framing recommendations drawnfrom evaluation findings.
