Proponentshailed its introduction by sayingthat it was the police cartridge of thefuture, a statement that was preceded (andfollowed) by extensive tests involving policedepartments-and a sizeable thatch ofinterested observers-throughout the land.It was, however, doubtful that a majorpolice changeover would take place, evenwith a special purchase price thl\t wouldlop a few bucks off the price of the alsonewSmith & Wesson Model 57, which wasspecially chambered for the Al MAgnum.Full retail, by the way, was a mere $140,the same as you'd have paid for the S&WModel 29 in .44 Magnum.Reduced recoil, combined with stoppingpower that is superior to that of the .357Magn~m, render the Al Magnum nearlyideal for silhouette shooting or huntingpurposes. With these advantages in II).ind,it makes little difference that the round hashad small success in the matter of beingadopted by police departments. Furthermore, the fact that the Al Magnum, standingas it does between the .357 and the 044,exists as the "16 gauge" of magnum handguncartridges should take' nothing from itsmerit. The ,.41 Magnum is rewarding tohandload, and, because ofits in-hand tractability,it is a joy to shoot.obtaining higher velocities with the lighterbullets, but little would have beenachieved beyond the sensational figuresthemselves. With both feet firmly on theground, it is reasonable to recommendnothing lighter than 200 grains for the Almagnum. The only exception might benoted in the case of the 150-grain load, which might be used as a light plinker. But,it's not adequate for serious shooting.EFFECTIVE HANDLOADSMore effective handloads will resultfrom the use of heavier bullets. For example,if you're into casting bullets, Lyman'sNo. 41026, cast of wheel-weight lead andsized to AIO-inch diameter, will weigh outat about 240 grains. Propelled by 19.5grains of 2400 and a CC1 350 primer, velocity will come to 1170 fps with a footpoundenergy rating of about 730.If you prefer to stick with over-thecounterswaged bullets, Speer offers anexcellent 220-grain semi-jacketed softpoint. This bullet, ahead of 19.5 grains of2400 and the CCI 3.50 primer, will clock anaverage velocity of 1320 fps from a 6-inchbarrel for about 850 foot pounds ofenergy.Remember, with these or any handloads, that safety calls for reducing allcharges by at least 10 percent. The loadthat may be tolerated by one gun can beexcessive in another.A JOY TO SHOOTMy handloading ofthe Al Magnum hasNOTE SLIGHT TAPERbeen for a Model 57 with a 6-inch barrel. It should be noted by all who handloadPrior to beginning, it was noted that the that, especially in magnum calibers, resizcase'srim, which is approximately 0488- to ing dies for straight-sided cases are maA89-inch in diameter with a thickness chined internally so as to introduce a slightof .055- to .060-inch, will fit shellholders taper in the case wall.
