Box 5704, Asheville, NC 28803 )\..-------------HANDGUN FIREPOWER(Continued from page 39)ability to handle multiple targets. It is lowin single-shot stopping power. The Al and045 share great stopping power but pay forit in reduced ammunition availability. The.357 seems to strike a balance betweenthem.Another consideration enters, and thatis the mechanical difference betweenpistols and revolvers.I wondered at this point just how muchdifference these things make to differentshooters, and decided to try an experiment. On .different days at the range Iasked two friends to shoot a planned"course" for m~ against the stopwatch. The four guns were used, one after theother, each against a single silhouette targetat 25 yards.THE PRACTICAL TESTINGEach gun started clean, cold and in thereadiness condition in which I, at least, would carry it. One complete reload waspositioned by the gun; a full magazine forthe pistols and a full reloader for revolvers... My first shooter was a young lady who isan inexperienced shooter. While she hadfired ~ll the guns used, she was not familiarwith any of them. The second shooter was an experiencedformer gunsmith and excellent shot. He,too, had fired all of the guns involved butwas not really familiar with any of themindividually. Both shooters were notably more accuratewith revolvers. I find it most interestingthat both were most effective with the.357 Magnum despite the lesser recoil andquicker recovery with the 9mm P Model59. The first shooter, in particular, hadseveral mechanical problems with theModel 59. First, it misfired and the dudhad to be discarded. Then, the last shot ofthe first magazine failed to latch the slideback and, after reloading, she took time todiscover why the gun would not fire. Theslide was pulled back only after she wasprompted to do so.PROBLEMS OVER .357MAGFor even the experienced shooter, thetime increased markedly, as did a decreasein results when .357 caliber was passed.Obviously, the heavier calibers causedboth shooters problems.Data reflect the ammunition used: 123grain FMJ in 9mm P, 158 grain JHP in.357,210 grain lead in Al M, and 230 grainFMJ in 045 Aep. "Targets that could effectivelybe engaged" I include as a theoreticalcons·ideration; I intend it to illustrate akey difference in the large magazine 9mmP pistol. If targets presented themselvesone at a time, and ifthe average number ofhits achieved by the two shooters weremade, then 21 targets could have beenattacked.
