In an effort to accelerate theaction, time and promote better functioningthe new magazine was designed toplace the round as far forward as possibleby adding a spacer at the rear. This wascontrary to the customary High Standarddesign which had the spacer at the front. The change reduced by 1,4 inch the necessaryslide travel. So close is this tolerancethat the slide may not retract far enough topick up a round if one tries to use astandard magazine. In order to better observe the functioningcycle of the guns, Snyder purchased ahigh speed motion picture camera capableof up to 20,000 frames per second, One ofthe first lessons learned from the $15,000camera was that the magazine lips weresubject to stress when the gun was fired. These lips were known to be critical toreliable performance, so they were nothardened in the manufacturing process, and a special snap gauge was made so thelips could be adjusted to the close tolerancesrequired.During extensive firing tests, at a rangebuilt for the project at High Standard'sHamden, CT plant one gun was fired 2500rounds without a malfunction. BOX 1336FCLARKSBURG, WV 26301"During extensivefiring tests . . . one gunwas fired 2500 rounds, witltout a malfunction."remarkable achievement when the complexityof the gun is considered. Each gunwas packed with a special notice advisingthe shooter of the handling required andadvising the shooter to use plenty of oil.Snyder comments that they worked bestwhen practically drenched. In addition to designing a gun that shotand functioned well, High Standardwanted to provide a gun that felt good tothe shooter. Most shooters preferred amuzzle-heavy feel, so two large barrelweights were provided for most of theguns. These weights were adjustable, andcould be positioned anywhere along thebarrel. The extra weight on the barrelmade a very heavy gun when built on asteel frame, so High Standard made specialaluminum frames for most ofthe guns. The frames were machined from solidblocks ofaluminum, and only two guns areknown to have been made with steelframes. Both of these were modified Citationframes from the company's regularproduction.High Standard used two distinctly differentslide designs. For convenience thesehave been classified as "long" and "short"slide types. The long slide design is quiteconventional in appearance, and extendsthe full length ofthe frame.
