PISTOLSMITHINGBY CLAUD S. HAMILTONLATEST RECOIL SYSTEM FOR COLT .45LOWERS GROUP SIZE IN RANSOM TEST24D.B.P. Engineering of New Orleans,has recently started production of anew recoil system for the GovernmentModel Colt and the Commander.The D.B.P. system is really quite simple.It substitutes two stainless steel parts forstandard Colt parts: a long recoil springguide and an open-ended recoil springplug. These differ from the Colt parts inthat the guide extends all the way to themuzzle and controls the spring throughoutits entire travel. The open-ended plugserves to provide better control of therecoil spring in compression and to preventkinking arid buckling. More consistentand even spring performance fromshot to shot, says the company, should givebetter functional reliability. Felt recoil isreported to be more manageable foi theshooter, and better groups are possible offthe Ransom Rest.WATCH RECOIL SPRING PLUGThe D.B.P. System was tried in a newSeries 70/Mk IV .45. As always with thesepistols, care is required to assure that therecoil spring piug is kept under control andpointed away from the face as it is removed.This plug is under considerablepressure and can easily put out an eye ifyou get careless.After disassembling the pistol in theusual way, and removing the slide from thereceiver, and the recoil spring, guide andplug, place the slide upside down withbarrel and bushing in locked position.D.B.P. advises that all parts be well-oiledat this point. The new long recoil spring /guide is placed in position first, resting onthe bottom of the barrel and with its baseagainst the barrel link. Next, the recoilspring is inserted from the front and seatedall the way home on the guide. This is notas easy as it sounds; the guide has aspecially made enlarged seat at rear totightly control the spring and it takes a bitof doing to get the spring onto this seat.Next, the slide is assembled to the receiverin the usual manner and the slidestop pin is inserted and locked. Cock andlock the hammer with the thumb safety tohold the slide securely in position. Placethe new, open ended plug over the recoilspring. Keep forward the end which hasthe retaining cut inside to catch the springand the groove on the outside which mateswith the barrel bushing. This plug is moredifficult to seat than the original because ofits sharp edge. I found it wise to use a fiatwooden surface to force the plug homeand hold it 'til the bushing could be swunginto the locked position.Once assembled, there is no detectabledifference in the way the pistol operatesmanually. A friend and I took the pistol tothe range to see how it might perform withthe new system and the old.Over the years I have learned that I donot do very well until I have shot a fewgroups, so we took along a .45 to which Ihave recently added a fine Bar Sto stainlesssteel barrel which fits so tightly that thegun will not yet cycle properly. We eachfired it a magazine or two and got"warmed up."TEST FIRING GROUPSThen we moved to the new Series 70/Mk IV, "as issued," and fired two groups,each, standing, two hands, and sitting, twohands off of a sand bag rest. I broke thegun down and inserted the D.B.P. recoilparts and we repeated the drill. All groupswere fired using Super Vel 190 JHPs, andthere were no malfunctions of any kind.Our impressions were completely subjective,of course, but here's what we found:a. We agreed that we did a little bitbetter shooting in terms of accuracy, withthe new D.B.P. recoil system. I could notprove this from an analysis ofthe targets; itwas just a clear impression we shared.b.
