Chancesare slim that this guy is going to have ittogether in three days. He obviously wouldhave been better off practicing with his.357 for tl;lree days rather than trying tobuy his way to success.SIX MONTHS AHEADThe time to experiment with new equip-ment is six months before hunting season;not six days before, When you hunt youand probably considerably more accurate (Continued on page 48)TEMPTATION TO SWITCHAnother temptation is to switch fromiron sights to scopes, True, you can't shootany better than you can see and a scopecertainly enables you to see better-afteryou are familiar with using it. Time aftertime, I've had shooters ask to look througha scoped handgun and never get it positionedso they can see through it. That'snot a slam at scoped handguns or at theshooters, It's simply a fact of life thatshooting rapidly and accurately with ascoped handgun doesn't happen automaticallywhen you bolt qne to your gun, Itsimply takes practice to become comfortableand "automatic" with a scoped handgun,Personally, I find I'm at least as fast;with a scope than I am with iron sights. I'vealso been shooting scoped handguns about20 years. It doesn't take 20 years experienceto become familiar with using scopeson handguns, but it does take a good bit ofpractice. You still have to give a littlethought to mounting systems in order tofind one that will stay on the hard kickersbut scopes by Bushnell., TIC, Redfield,Leupold and Hutson all seem quite reliablein the field. If I had to pick the toughestof them I'd have to go with the Redfield.The Hutson is the smallest. Leupolds arelighter than Redfields. The TICs are inbetween on weight. The new Bushnell hasa power booster to instantly change from1.5 to 2.5 power.BETTER MOUNT SCOPE RIGHTEach scope has its specific advantageand all had better be mounted right on anyhard kicker or they aren't going to stay onthe gun very long.I very vividly remember getting a verynice press release on a base and rings 6-8years ago. It looked fairly good so I calledand listened to the spiel. I was assured a10" TIC .30-30 posed no problem to thisrig's reliability. After voicing my doubts, Ireluctantly agreed to put it on a TIC .30-30as directed. On the eighteenth shot, scope,base, rings and all came off. Cut me threetimes going by (hairline, side and back ofthe head) and crashed into the window ofthe station wagon. I still hear of similaroccurrences and they are still unnecessary:Unfortunately when recoil exceeds that ofthe .357 Magnum some of the over-thecounterbases give problems. The Redfieldbase seems about the best over-the-counterbase if it's properly installed. It sl.iJldepends on four 6 x 48 screws to affix it tothe gun, Now this is fine on one 14" .357Herrett TIC I've used quite a bit with theRedfield rig, but I wouldn't trust it onseveral calibers I've developed-such' asthe .338, .375, .411 and .439 JDJ or the .4570 that are capable of generating considerablerecoil.
