In order to make the rapidfireguns as versatile as possible, many ofthem were made with provisions formounting the sight in either location bysimply exchanging a few parts. Equal attentionwas given to the front sights, andan adjustable extended front sight wasused on many ofthe guns. The front sightsare carefully matched, and most have anassembly number which matches the gun.High Standard also experimented withmany barrel lengths, but the purpose wasto examine handling characteristics. Manyof the guns were made with a 41f2 inchbarrel which was threaded to accept amuzzle extension which would allow thebarrel weights to be placed further forward.The effective barrel length with theextension installed was 63.4 inches. Otherbarrel lengths ranged from 5 to 7 inches.The 41f2 inch barrel with muzzle extensionoffers considerable versatility for theshooter to tailor the feel of the gun to hisparticular preference. It would appear thatthis configuration was more or less standardfor there are at least seven guns somade, and McMillan's guns were this type.Although there are many other barrelarrangements, each is different in somerespect. One of the guns examined has ajump barrel in which two inches of thebarrel immediately in front ofthe chamberis cut away. The effective rifled barrellength is only a little over two inches.Green and others state that the accuracyfrom jump barrels in general is not as goodas other types.As the project was nearing completion,each gun was extensively test fired. Ifproblems were found it was sent back for.more work, but if it performed acceptablyit was serial numbered along with currentplant production. The guns were then issuedto selected shooters for field testing.The guns were not sold, but were loanedwith the understanding that they were tobe returned to High Standard. The majorityof shooters receiving the guns were onmilitary teams, for High Standard wantedto place the guns with shooters most likelyto make the 1968 Olympic team. In agesture of confidence, two guns were sentto McMillan, then a Marine Major, forthey were sure he would be one ofthe twochosen shooters.
