possibly surpassed the Federal in groupsize.I had also expected good results with thePrecision ammunition, and, as you can see,I was not disappointed. I have had thechance to fire a lot of commercial reloadsin the past several years, but I've neverfired anyting quite like these. Any leadingof the gun with this ammunition is practicallynon-existent. I fired two 50-shotgroups with Precison without cleaning thebarrel or cylinder, and there was just thebarest trace oflead to be seen, something Icouldn't say for my handloads and some ofthe other ammo I fired. Precision makeswhat they call the "50 Yard Wadcutter,"and it certainly is aptly named. They makethe bullet, while the actual reloading isdone by Hudson Valley Ordinance.I spoke with the President of Precision,Mr. Gene Smith, who is a design engineerby trade. He told me that he has drawn uphis own set of rigid specifications for .38reloads, and follows them to the letter inhis operation. The only thing he would sayabout his bullet design, is that in themaking process, each slug is whacked with10,000 pounds twice, to give it it's finalshape and consistency. On top of that, mygun stays cleaner, without leading, thanwith any other ammo I've ever fired. Given a barrel with adifferent twist, perhaps a change inpowder charge or brand, or even a changein primers, the results with my handloadsmay have been different. The point is that}don't think you can match mass-producedconsistency with home handloads. I have afriend who reloads on a Star press and herecently showed me some targets that hefired from a Ransom Rest at 50 yards usinghis handloads and Remington match. Hisresults· were the same as mine, with theRemington showing a much better groupover his own loads.I also gave my handloads a try at 25 yds.,along with the Precision and Federal. Thehome brew did give X-ring accuracy atthat distance over 18 shots, but some holeswere barely cutting the scoring line.
