CONTROLLABLE .44(Continued from page 75)fine powder did not take up enough volumewithin the large .44 Magnum case. Anappropriate load of Bullseye (8 grains) toproduce the desired 1000 fps, left too muchunfilled space. Unfilled space, I believe, affects uniformity in burning characteristicswith resulting accuracy problems.Fillers, such as Dacron, were out of thequestion for police use where the gunwould be carried day in and day out.In the final analysis, Hercules Red Dotproved the best powder available. Eightgrains of Red Dot filled the case well, produced 995 fps measured by a CustomChronograph at nine feet from the muzzle, burned clean and completely as evidencedby the low level muzzle flash, was acceptablyaccurate for combat shooting, andproduced recoil which was less punishingthan most police .357 Magnum revolvers. With the Taurus bullet I was getting 503foot pounds of energy, expansion to .75inch, and penetration of only three to fourinches in hard backed but soft target medium. It was indeed a "manstopper!" Thecombination of work on the 4" Model 29,and the load, made the gun comfortable toshoot for an experienced combat shooler. The final test was, of course, finishingthe PPC within the time limits. The firstphase was the aforementioned 12 shots in25 seconds at the seven yard line. My veryfirst try produced a tight little two-inchgroup in less than 20 seconds and, I guess,it was at that point that I realized I hadaccomplished my goal. Final score on thePPC for my first run was 97.2%.Unfortunately, there are probably fewpolicemen whose department firearms regulationswould allow them to carry either a.44 Magnum or reloads. If you have thisfreedom, as do the members of myoiddepartment, you might consider this load.On the other hand there are many honestcitizens who have or carry a handgun forpersonal protection. If yqu have shiedaway from the big magnum as "uncontrollable,"you need do so no longer-as.Iong as you are practiced enough to contributeyour part.Mustang/Rangefield Grips, 1334 E.Katella Ave., Anaheim, CA 92805.Mag-Na-Port Arms Inc., 30016 SouthRiver Rd., Mt.
