pid-FireSince the shooter is required to beginwith his arm down at a 45 degree angle, and not raise it until the targets are faced,he has only about 3Y2 seconds for a faststring. Given these circumstances a veryspecial handgun is required. The .22 Shortis the standard round, for even the mildestof .22 Long Rifle loads would cause theshooter to lose sight of the target in recoil, and there just isn't any time for recovery. When International Rapid Fire becamean Olympic event in 1948, the competitorsall used special Hammerli and Waltherguns. American shooters used them too,for there was no suitable American-madegun. High Standard was quick to recognizethe situation, and the Olympic name firstappeared on a High Standard gun in late1949.Their First Model Olympic was simplyan adaptation of their Model G-E to .22Short. In what is believed to bea first, thecompany used aluminum for the slide. Thelight metal provided more reliable functioningwith the Short round. A specialmagazine was also needed, and the FirstModel Olympic was furnished with a peculiarcurved design. Functioning wasn'tvery reliable, primarily due to the magazine, and sales were slow. Only 1200 oftheFirst Model Olympic were sold before itwas discontinued in 1950 along with all theother guns of the "G" series. Availableevidence suggests that High Standard continuedto try to improve its Olympicmodel. I have an experimental First ModelOlympic with aluminum frame and anunusual muzzle brake, which appears tobe a transition piece between the First andAbove, short slide identical to pistolused by Col. W. W. McMillan when heachieved Gold Medal for u.s. in J960.Left, the only remaining example of a"lump" barrel. Entire bore has beenmilled away, and a forcing cone cut.Above, experimental X-28 is identicalto first Model Olympic except frameis aluminum and this one has unusu~Ibarrel configuration and muzzle brake.Below is long slide model with ventedbarrel. The milling cuts minimizedrecoil for even greater gun stability.Left, barrel with J4 ports. Row onright side used escaping gases to helpshooter to swing the gun to the right.Above, Standard first Model Olympiconly model to use the curvedmagazine.
