is a scant IJ/.; inches long, and operateswithin a housing attached to the frame. The housing serves no purpose other thanto cover and protect the internal workingparts. The short slide is designed with ears'to provide a gripping area for manualoperation, while the long slide is groovedin a conventional manner. The area of theslide which touches the barrel is roundedso only a small area is actually in contactwith the barrel. In studying malfunctionsof other rapid fire guns it was found thatthe most common ones were where thefired case was trapped between the barreland slide. The slides of the High Standardguns were then designed to be free ofsharpedges the fired case might catch upon, andwould instead be pushed clear by theclosing slide.NONE HAVE EXTRACTORNone of the slides has an extractor. Thisdeparture from conventional designs wasmade for two reasons: first, the remainingpowder gas was adequate to blow the firedcase out in normal operation, and second, the action was so fast that a conventionalextractor would be likely to interfere withthe action and actually slow things down. The choice of aluminum for both frameand slide led to an unexpected problem. The weaker aluminum frames sometimesdeveloped cracks in the area of the searand hammer pins after extensive firing. Tocorrect the problem the frame was reinforcedby placing a case-hardened steelinsert in the weak area of the frame. Thisfeature is not found on all the guns.In a further attempt to reduce recoil andwear, an unusual buffer system was designedto dampen the rearward momentumof the slide. The buffer is a two-partsystem which is attached to the rear of theframe. First is a spring-loaded plate whichcan move rearward through two holes inthe frame. Spring tension is adjustable bymeans of a set screw. Immediately behindthe place is a rubber bushing mounted on asmall pin. In operation the slide is drivenback against the plate which is, in turn, forced against the rubber bushing. To haveroom for the buffer system the specialframes are about \12 inch longer at the rearthan are the standard frames. The systemis undoubtedly effective, for the gunswhich have been fired most extensivelyshow little battering of the slide that onewould expect.COMMON & UNUSUAL SIGHTSThe sights used on the rapid-fire gunsare both common and unusual. The rearsight is the standard adjustable sight usedon High Standard guns ofthe time, but themethod of mounting it was new, and twodifferent rear sight placements were used.High Standard has begun the practice ofplacing the rear sight on the barrel with its103 series. This was intended to eliminate apossible harmful effect from sight motion. This practice was continued with therapid-fire gun.
