Some shooters are aghast at theidea ofshooting 4.5 gr. bullseye in the wadmatches. The fact is, it's not all that badwith the.slide-mounted scoped pistol. Theweight of the scope and mounts soak upthe recoil to the point where it is aboutthe same as the standard 3.5 gr. bullseyeor factory match ammo in the ironsighted.45.Some shooters have expressed a reluctanceto install an expensive scope on a .45slide lest the recoil reduce it to brokenparts in short order. In some cases this maybe true, but this writer has found the toughdurable Leupold ModelS 2x extended eyerelief scope equal to the task. Many LeupoldModel S 2x scopes have been installedon Government Model and Colt .Gold Cup .45 ACP slides firing manythousands of rounds of ammo with practicallyno problems. One Leupold slidemounted scope has fired 10,000 rounds of.45 ACP ammo without even one sightchange. The many thousands of rounds of experimentationwith the .45 slide mountingsystem have provided some guide lines forfunctioning success. It was discovered thatto achieve the 1-300 ratio of malfunctions, the scope barrel or adjustment housinghad to be at least .700 and ideally .720" ••• a s"ooter does not"ave to use "is timeand concentration onsig"t alignment."above the top of the slide. The LeupoldGold Cup slide mount mentioned earlierin this article does not set the scope up highenough. The result is, far too frequently anejected fired case will hit the scope andbounce back into the ejection port to becaught by the slide on its way forward. Theresult is of course, a malfunction. It wasfound that by welding an extension orshim 5/32" thick on to each ofthe LeupoldGold Cup slide mount bases, it would raisethe scope high enough to let the fired caseout. The underside ofthe extension shouldbe cut to fit the contour of the slide. A No.S socket head screw down thru each of thebases and threaded into the slide wouldcomplete the installation. There is some concern over the use ofthe scope in the timed and rapid fire stages,"because it appears difficult to find thetarget in the glass." The answer is that alittle practice will solve this problem muchthe same as the deer hunter must practicethrowing up his newly scoped rifle to ~ethis eye into the glass for a fast runmngshot. The correct pistol shooting stanceand position in relation to the target willalso help the new scope shooter to find histarget. The fact is that there are manypoints to be gained with the scope in thetimed and rapid fire because a shooter. does not have to use up his valuable timeand concentration on sight alignment. Hehas only to look thru his scope, allow thereticle to settle somewhere near the tenring (depending on his holding ability) andsqueeze straight back smoothly on thetrigger until the shot breaks.Of the many advantages of the scopedpistol for tournament shooting, there aresome disavantages. One of the greatest isthe wind. The installation of a scope on apistol increases the square area by about25 percent, giving the wind an additionaleffect on the second pistol. To make mattersworse, the additional movementcaused by the wind is then magnified bythe power of the scope. In this case ashooter can on:Iy go back to the basicsconcentrating on squeezing the triggerwithin his minimum wobble area. Shooterswho have mastered the art of shootingin the wind will be similarly rewarded withthe scope. Shooters who are bothered bythe wind with iron sights will suffer disasterwith the scope.Duelists of old were especially aware ofthe balance of their dueling pistols. It wasknown that a dueling pistol, to be at itsbest, must be slightl.y muzzle heavy. So it iswith a target pistol. Adding weight to thepistol in the form of a scope and mountmust be done with great care in positioningthat weight so as to accomplish the bestpossible balance to the pistol. Some experimentationmay be necessary to determinethe exact position of the scope inorder to get the best balance of the pistol.Mounting systems should be d,esignedwith some flexibility in positioning thescope.FRAGILE REPUTATIONSomepiace .along the line the scopedfirea.rm acquired the reputation for beingundependable or at least fragile. This is in~vidence by the fact that there are a multitudeof see-thru, swing-off and tip-upmounting systems being marketed todayfor hunting rifles. The aspiring scopeshooter just cannot believe that he candepend on that scope and so must haveaccess to the old iron sights. Knowledgableshooters kno:" that a properly scoped firearmis no more fragile than its iron sightedcousin. Scope sighted pistols, like rifl~s,given reasonably careful handling will performflawlessly for many years. When cleaning the lens of a scope, careshould be exercised to prevent scratchingthe coating on the lens. Cleaning can beaccomplished with a cotton ball and alcoholor lens' tissue designed for use onplastic eye glass lens. It is a good idea toequip your scope with a set of lens coversfor use when the pistol is not being fired.Several different makes are available.Traditionally, the weight of a targetpistol has been from 40 to 46 oz. Ifyou addanother 10 to 13 oz. in the form of a scopeand mount you have a package weighingup to 59 oz.
