used this form ofporting. As an additionalfeature, each hole was· tapped so theshooter had the option ofplugging holes invarying combinations until he found anarrangement that suited him. Both Greenand Teague felt this was especially importantfor it allowed adjustments to be madefor best functioning with different brandsand lots of ammo. There was considerable concern overthe effect on accuracy from drilling all theholes in the barrel. It was assumed thataccuracy would suffer, but the concern wasto what degree. Most of the experimentalguns grouped a little over an inch at 25meters, and everyone agreed this was marginal.High Standard set their accuracygoal at 3/4 inch groups. Unfortunately notall the barrel configurations were capableof this. One of the reasons for the loss ofaccuracy was that when the drill bit brokethrough to the rifling, it could not cut aclean hole. The resulting sharp edges deformedthe bullet. High Standard wasaware of this, and the guns that were shotin competition appear to have been polishedto remove as many rough spots aspossible. In a later Air Force development,a number of barrels were ported betweenthe drilling and rifling operations in manufacture.According to Green these barrels"Snyder was determinedthat High Standardwou.d produce the mostre'iab'e gun possib'e."shot considerably better. High Standard'stesting also included various types andtwists ofrifling, and ended up using a verylast one in ten twist. Every available brandofammunition was also tested, and Snyderreports that the High Standard guns preferredEley and Lapua match ammunition, but had a tendency to be erratic withother brands. The specially ordered Remingtonammo had a tendency to keyhole.Since any shot which appears elongated onthe target is considered a skidder, andtherefore a miss, in international scoring, the ammunition could not be used. Unfortunatelythe project ended without theU.S. ammunition manufacturers having achance to work on the problem.Rapid fire guns 9f the time shared acommon problem of unreliable functioning, and many good scores had gone downthe drain due to an untimely jam. Snyderwas determined that High Standard wouldproduce the most reliable gun possible, and felt that the magazine was a majorsource of malfunctions. For this reason, one of the four modelmakers was assignedto do nothing but make and fit magazines. Each one was tested in various guns untilone was found in which it worked reliably, and it was then matched to that gun.
