Fishery and Sea ResourcesFigure 2: Phases and applications of an LCA (based on ISO 14040, [14]).This survey can be analyzed geographically,by identifying several areas wherewaste or emissions are produced. The approachesare basically of two types:• splitting the amount of emissions foreach stage of production (fishing, processing, disposal, transportation, sales);• comparing the stress produced at differenttimes or in multiple generations ofcontemporary production. The life cycle-associated processes andthe related material and energy flows intoand out of the system enable to representthe production system and its relationshipwith the natural system. The network ofthese relations among the production system, the inventory of used materials andthe exchanges with the environment, canbe linked to the so-called “boundaries of asystem”.2.3 System BoundaryThe boundary of the system is representedby the whole set of intermediate products’process flows, which carry one or more definedfunctions [17]. The boundary of thesystem is divided into a number of processunits; these are in turn linked by flows ofintermediate products. The boundaries ofthe system in this preliminary study includeevery phase of the fishing process, until thesale/delivery of the product on the docks. The study of the system starts with an inventoryof materials needed for the production,i.e. fuel and fishing equipment.
