Marine research at CNRFigure 1: Fishery Observing System (FOS) elements.for the estimate of the catch is “boxes offishes” considering anchovies the averagesize is expressed in number of individualsper kilogram, while sardine averagesize may be selected between two categories(large or small). The chosen measureunits are those usually adopted by fishermenof the Adriatic fleet to indicate catchand size for these two species. In the postprocessingphase, catches are converted inkg using a known conversion factor betweenboxes and kg. This conversion factormay differ from harbour to harbour. The last component of the FOS is a temperatureand pressure sensor (TPs hereafterFigure 1c). The probes used, manufacturedby Star Oddi Company (Iceland), are verycompact (few centimetres in length). Thelatter feature is very important consideringthe fact that the sensor has to be attachedto the fishing gear (an example ofTPs installed on the weight used to make apelagic trawler net sink, is showed in Figure1d) small instruments have in fact theadvantage to have a narrow impact on thegear and to be easily positioned in a safeway. Two types of TPs are used: DST Milliand DST Logic. The first is a standardproduct made by Star Oddi, while the secondwas produced following some indicationssuggested to the company during thedevelopment phase of the FOS. The DSTMilli, once switched on, collects data continuously, even when the boat is not workingthis aspect limits the duration of memoryand batteries. Furthermore, after some1891
