Fishery and Sea ResourcesFigure 3: Research activity on polychaetes: (a, b, c) polychaetes rearing in aquaculturefarm; (d, e) mucus collection; (f) antibacterial (lysozyme-like activity) of polychaetemucus (Standard assay on Petri dishes).1.2 Fodder industryThe feeding of aquatic organisms is acrucial point in aquaculture. The fodderrepresents not only a source of importantnutritional oligodynamic components[16] but also a modulator of immune defence. The use of animal proteins in fishfeeding produces negative feedback (potentialpathogenic transmission, increasingof the over fishing on the fish-stocks,BSE warning). In this context, the researchhas to be focused on the individuationof new protein sources as alreadyproved by our previous projects on the biologicaltreatment of wastes from aquaculturefarms through bioremediators (e.g. VITriennial Plane, Italian Fishery and AquacultureMinistry; regional project Bioimpact“Pilot project for the diversification ofthe mariculture production and the reductionof the environmental impact”; regionalproject PO.IN.T. “Polyculture Activity Integratedto mussel-culture: pilot projectin Taranto”). Data from these projectspointed out that the target organisms (i.e.Sabella spallanzanii, Branchiomma luctuosum,Cladophora prolifera, Gracilariadura) represent bioremediators highly efficientin removing organic and inorganic2046
