Fishery and Sea ResourcesFigure 6: ChE vs ASCh activity levels (nmol min −1 mg prot −1 ± s.d.) in M. barbatusexpressed in three different sites and two sampling periods. The results of the analysis of acetylcholinesteraseactivity of M. barbatus areshown in Figure 6. Inhibition of AChE wassignificantly greater in site 1 and 2 (Gulf ofPatti) both in first (p¡0.05) and in the secondsurvey (p¡0.01) than in the site 3 (Milazzorefinery). No significant differencewas observed between the AChE activitiesof the specimens collected from these twosites, either in the June (p=0.92) nor in January(p=0.70).Regarding the comparison of data for thetwo surveys, there were no significant differencesin this enzyme activity betweensummer and winter survey, either in site1 (p=0.42) or site 2 (p=0.13) or site 3(p=0.53).Regarding the comparison between sizeclasses, it wasn’t significant difference inany of the three sites (S1: p=0.30; S2:p=0.76; S3: p=0.46). Comparing theAChE activities for the two classes of sizein the two sampling periods and in differentsites, there was no significant difference eitherin the first (S1: p=0.64, S2: p=0.85,S3: p=0.68), nor in the second survey (S1:p=0.35, S2: p=0.14, S3: insufficient numberof samples for comparison).Vitellogenin gene was found to be expressedonly in a specimen of 16 cm takenfrom site 3 in summer survey (Figure 7).All the examined individuals from the threesites had testes at maturity stages III andIV, in both summer and winter samplings(Figures 8 and 9). None of the examinedspecimens showed any signs of histopathologicalalterations, such as necrosis, degeneration, feminization, and/or delayed or arrestedgamete development.2090
