Fishery and Sea Resources(YOY) fish of euryhaline marine specieswere separated from the rest of the sampleand fixed in 4% buffered formaldehyde. In the laboratory, the specimens were identifiedat species level and counted. Subsampleswere taken at each sampling andthe SL of each specimen in the sub-samplewas then measured. Between January andMarch 2007, the recruitment period for A.anguilla in Lesina Lagoon [24], the migrationof glass eels through the AcquarottaChannel was measured daily: two fykenets, modified for the capture of the glasseels (1.6 m long, 0.43 m wide, with a 2 mmmesh and wings of different lengths - 1.3 mand 1.65 m) were placed on the two sidesof the channel. The glass eels were countedin situ and a sub-sample of these was takento the laboratory. Here the specimens wereanaesthetised in Eugenol diluted in water, and their total length (TL) was measured. On waking the glass eels were returned tothe lagoon.Sampling in the lagoon basin was carriedout monthly from October 2006 to August2007 in nine sampling stations (Figure 1).Stations 1, 3, 5, 7 and 8 were located nearthe mouths of freshwater channels. Specifically, stations 3 and 8 were situated in areasthat received the partially treated wastewaters of three municipalities (with a totalof about 30,000 inhabitants). Station5 was located near the mouth of the PillaChannel which discharges waters drainedfrom nearby arable land. Stations 1 and7 were positioned in areas affected by thedischarge of effluent from buffalo and fishfarms, by small channels on the westernside and by the Zannella River on the easternside. Stations 4 and 6 were located onthe seaward side of the lagoon. Finally, stations 2 and 9 were located near the twotidal channels. The fish were captured using a manualbeach seine (11 m long and 1.30 m high, the central section having a 2-mm meshand the two lateral sections a 4-mm mesh)with a central bag (about 3 m long and 0.8m in diameter with a 2-mm mesh). Thearea sampled in each haul was about 150m 2 . The fish were fixed in 4% bufferedformaldehyde. In the laboratory, specimenswere identified at species level andcounted. Only the YOY individuals of euryhalinemarine species were measured forSL.At the same time as the fish sampling, water temperature, salinity, pH and dissolvedoxygen in both tidal channels andthe lagoon basin were recorded using aYSI 6920 multi-parametric probe equippedwith a 650 MDS data logger in order to establishthe sampling stations’ hydrologicalfeatures. For each species, fish collected in all samplingsof the same month were pooled tostudy temporal variations in juvenile abundancein both tidal channels. The recruitmentpatterns of marine species juvenileswere investigated by the constructionand subsequent visual inspection oflength-frequency distributions. For eachspecies, fish from the fyke-net samplingswere pooled and length-monthly frequencydistributions were constructed from the observedsize distributions in the samplesand from the total number of individuals. At each station and for each species, theabundances from replicate seine hauls werepooled in order to study the spatial variationin juvenile abundance in the lagoonbasin.2102
