Cusqueña retains themystery and magic of its origin in Cusco and appeals toconsumers who value the best brands.Building a Zambianbarley industryZambian Breweries has beenworking with farmers to builda Zambian barley industry.Three years ago, our Zambian businessimported 100% of the barley needed forits breweries.With a climate that supports a strongwheat industry, Zambian Breweries sawan opportunity to build a national barleyindustry, improving the security of itsbarley supply and reducing costs bysourcing locally. The business developedpartnerships with technical experts andbuilt relationships within the establishedZambian farming industry to designa barley farming model. Working incollaboration with CHC Commodities,experts in crop storage and post-harvestmanagement, in 2009 a successful pilotestablished the capability of farmers inZambia to produce a high-yielding,high-quality crop.Zambian Breweries now works with21 commercial farmers, who employover 4,000 rural workers. The barley theyproduce is used in the production of thecompany’s premium beer brands – Mosi,Mosi Gold, Castle Lager and CarlingBlack Label.Despite the strong wheat price, againstwhich barley competes for acreage,Zambian barley costs about US$100per tonne less than imported barley.Next year, we expect the Zambian barleyindustry to produce a surplus of about10,000 tonnes, which can be exportedto local markets such as Uganda andTanzania.Managing sharedwater risk in PeruThrough the Water Futurespartnership SABMiller workswith NGOs such as WWFand The Nature Conservancyin eight markets to protectthe watersheds on whichour business depends.This year the local Water Futurespartnership in Peru undertook a seriesof studies to examine the water resourcesavailable in the basins that supply each ofBackus’ breweries. The first, in the Rímacriver basin in Lima, identified a number ofprojects to improve water security for theregion. Backus is now reviewing a numberof aquifer sustainability projects including:• Improving the infrastructure of canalsand river beds• Reusing treated water to irrigate publicgreen areas such as parks• Establishing a Rímac River WaterObservatory – an expert technical panelto monitor and assess the aquifer.Other local businesses and communitiesalso depend on the watershed, andBackus’ water risk cannot be addressedin isolation. This year Backus becamea founding partner in the Aquafondo,established by The Nature Conservancy.The fund (which has an initial start-upcapital of US$900,000) will invest inconservation, water protection measures,education and communication projects inLima. Backus is working to encouragemore businesses and institutions to jointhe alliance, to safeguard shared watersupplies for the future.Supporting smallretailers in ColombiaThe Bavaria Foundation’sDestapa Futuro programmeis the largest private initiativepromoting entrepreneurshipin Colombia.It seeks to boost economic developmentacross the country by supporting highpotential entrepreneurs.This year, the Bavaria Foundation hasbeen tackling one of the main barriersto starting a small business – the lackof access to credit. The Foundationhas worked with local banks to providemicro-finance for shopkeepers so they canstrengthen their businesses, increase theirrevenues and improve their quality of life.More than 4,000 shopkeepers havebenefited in two years with US$6 millionmade available in micro-credit financing.Over the last five years the BavariaFoundation has helped to create over280 businesses through the DestapaFuturo programme, supporting over1,100 entrepreneurs by investing overUS$8 million in seed capital and US$2million for training and mentoring.The investment, practical advice andmentoring provided means that 93% ofthe businesses supported through theprogramme are still operating.In turn, the entrepreneurs who havebenefited from the programme havecreated over 5,000 jobs.Overview Business review Governance Financial statements Shareholder information
